“No idea. Must be the endorphins from working out.”

She looked at Mr. Tangero, and he was looking at both of them. She cleared her throat. “Why are you staring?”

“I am beginning to see why our original tactics wouldn’t work. The dynamic is more complicated than anticipated.”

Haley got off the stool she had perched on and stretched. Monster jumped into her arms and got the pets she demanded. “Come on, fuzzy butt. Let’s go downstairs and get this over with.”

The other two guys got to their feet and followed her as she cradled her big buddy.

Wearing casual clothes made things easier. Heading back to the lab with her cat made facing the men in lab coats easier.

She set Monster on the floor and walked toward the necklace on the stand. She sighed and walked to the necklace, lifting it and putting it around her neck, fixing the clasp with a click. Power surged through her, and Jarol walked toward her.

“How do you feel?”

“Buzzing. How are you feeling?”

He smiled. “Fine. Why?”

“Are you up to an adventure? I promise it won’t take long.”

He chuckled. “Sure. What do you need?”

She faced him. “Take my hands.”

He blinked. “What?”

She extended her hands, and he took them. A shockwave went through the room and shattered the protective glass.

She stared into his face, and the world they were in spun away.

Mr. Tangero walked across the shattered glass, looking at the huge cat, who was crouched next to the ancient box and staring at the couple in the centre of the room.

They were both glowing and completely still.

The researchers had every kind of monitoring device available aimed at the couple. All they could do was watch and try to guess what was happening.

Jarol looked around and asked, “Where are we?”

Haley looked toward the distant mountains. “We are in the shadowlands. We need to go there.” She pointed toward the rock on the horizon.

“Why?”

She snorted. “This is a stupid team-building exercise.”

“What?”

“The weapon only properly works with a couple. She provides the energy, and he turns it into a weapon.”

“Why, Haley, is this how you flirt?” He looked amused.

She turned and started toward the range. “Oh, shut up and start walking. This is our spirit form, by the way. Our bodies are just standing in the lab.”

He chuckled. “You don’t say. Well, your spirit looks lovely. Gorgeous and strong.”
