Mr. Tangero frowned. “How can you tell?”

She stuck her leg out and hiked up her sweats. “I got these somewhere.”

He inhaled. “Both?”

“Both.”

“And they got in your way.” He groaned and stepped back.

“No idea.”

Jarol walked in, sweating, with a towel around his neck, sweats, and a tight tank top.

Haley nodded. “You have a gym.”

“East wing.” He smiled and then frowned when he saw the ice pack. “What happened?”

She blinked as he took the pack and stared at her cheek. “Uh, sleep fighting. Well, the warlocks are lucky that they walked away with all their limbs.”

Mr. Tangero nodded. “There was only minor burn damage.”

“Good.”

Jarol carefully pressed the ice pack to her cheek. “Are you injured anywhere else?”

“Just bruises all over.”

Jarol looked at her and then at Tangero. “What happened?”

The tablet was handed over, and Jarol’s eyes went wide. “What the hell?”

“Apparently, the lady was called to get more artifacts, and the on-duty guards tried to stop her. She was asleep during the fight.”

Jarol replayed the fight a few more times. “Kicks the guys to the floor and then saunters down toward the lab. And in the lab, you just stick out your feet, one at a time, and the bracelets snap into place.” He looked up. “Haley, are you sure you are all right?”

“I am fine, just beat to hell. Apparently, those guys didn’t pull their punches.”

Jarol looked at her. “Are you sure you are all right?”

She nodded. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to use the artifacts, but since this hurts more than I thought, I am just going to try something.” She focused, drew her breath in, and then let the warmth of the stones wash over her. When it was done, she put the compress down and flexed her face. “That’s better.”

She lifted her hand and saw the blue, black, and red fading. “Cool.”

Sarah smiled. “You can heal yourself?”

“Yeah. Handy, too, since the military seems to enjoy beating the hell out of me.” She wrinkled her nose.

Jarol looked at Mr. Tangero. “Where are they?”

“Hospital. Radiation poisoning.”

Haley turned to look at Mr. Tangero. “Radiation poisoning? Those are two words guaranteed to make me nervous.”

Jarol said softly. “You are fine. It doesn’t have an effect on shadowborn.”

“What?”

“We are lightly radioactive. That is how they can detect us.” Jarol shrugged.
