She smiled and shook her head. “No, I am not human; I haven’t taken on a source.”

He smiled. “I never said you did. If you had, the jewellery would not have worked.”

“Oh. Well, that means that that box of records was a time bomb. Anyone else sticking their hand in would have had it burned off.”

“If they were lucky.”

They headed up the wide staircase, and instead of turning toward her office, he turned and stepped up the upper stairway. “The family quarters are upstairs. It gives the illusion of privacy.”

“There is a sign for a porn store across from my bedroom window at home. I will take any illusion I can get.”

Monster squeaked and wiggled out of her arms. She tore up the steps ahead of them.

Haley sighed. “I think she smells toys or dinner.”

“Her food was delivered to Sarah. She will keep track of it. Monster has already gotten one serving upon entering the kitchen.”

“Oh, good. Bad things happen if she doesn’t get fed. Usually in the middle of the night.”

Lord Renith chuckled. “Sounds tense.”

“Yes and no. It’s comforting to have someone there.”

He nodded and escorted her down the hallway and to a room that had a light blue marble plaque on it. Monster was waiting for them. “Here you go.”

He swung the door open, and Monster jumped inside.

“Oh, wow, they really like cats.” She looked at the maze of cat trees, all large enough to support Monster. A fuzzy cat bed at the foot of the four-poster and a pile of toys in a soft container were in the corner.

“I have been assured that the litter box is inside that piece of furniture there.” He pointed to an end table.

“Oh, good.” Monster was climbing one of the posts, and she jumped from one to the other with a lot of joy.

Haley saw her duffel bag at the side of the bed, and she opened it to find it was empty. “How fast are they?”

“I am guessing that they used magic to do it.”

She went to the wardrobe and opened it, finding all of her office gear in precise order by colour.

Lord Renith looked. “That’s it?”

“Um, yes. I have office clothes and sweats. Not a lot in between.”

“Interesting. My mother had an entire room for her clothes.”

She smiled. “That sounds like a lot of work.”

“It probably was.” Lord Renith smiled. “Would you like to lie down for an hour? You have had a rough day, and the food is still in process.”

“I will be called for dinner?”

He nodded. “Absolutely.”

“Thank you. You have been very kind, Lord Renith.”

“Jarol.”

She kicked off her shoes and nodded. “Right. Jarol.”
