“She’s the thing that keeps me in the city. Since she is mostly a cat but obviously something else, I am not sure how to register her for travel.”

“You have tried to move?”

“Four times. Everything falls through, so I have resigned myself to living here and started my career as a temp. You would be shocked at how many people think that shadowborn don’t even deserve to get an education.”

He shook his head. “I really wouldn’t. I have the same classification and have run into issues as well.”

She looked past Monster’s shoulder. “Really?”

“Really.”

“Why aren’t you married?”

He smiled. “Sarah asks that as well. I suppose I never found the right woman or one who could deal with being in this position. It didn’t seem fair.”

“Right. Fair. Of course.” She buried her face into Monster’s striped fur.

“You have no husband?”

She laughed. “No. Just a giant cat.”

“Family?”

“Across the continent. I came here to further my education, and everything sort of conspired to lock me in, so I was able to get my office management course but none of my university courses were authorized. This place is really paranoid about shadowborn.”

“Well, there have been a few who manifested power to manipulate others, and it has become a matter of paranoia.”

“In that case, why are you helping them?”

He fed Monster another sliver of cheese. “Because it is my family’s duty to help them and guard the edge of the rift.”

“It both sucks and blows,” she mumbled against her cat.

He chuckled. “Sarah likes you.”

“She and I will never work out. Different generations, and I am not into females.”

He nodded with a smile. “She will be disappointed, I am sure.”

“How do you know she likes me?”

“She is not making any of my favourites for dinner.”

Haley laughed. “Good to know. She seemed nice.”

“I think she was my grandfather’s housekeeper. Our kind don’t age like the standard population.”

“Yes, I have been told as much. I still don’t understand why it was acceptable for this position.”

“They can’t ban shadowborn. It would wreck the entire project. Did you want to see where you are sleeping?”

“Sure. Did they get Monster’s stuff?”

“Yes, and they stopped at a pet store for a bit more. The warlocks consider familiars as magnificent as your Monster worth pampering.”

“She’s not a familiar.”

He laughed. “If you say so.”
