Who would even try to rescue me?

Josephine, I thought. My goddessmother would not betray me.

The vampires crept closer, and Walker waved his torch wildly.

One of the vampires swiped at me, but I batted him away. Thanks to Mom’s training, combat was second nature, but no one could fight twenty assailants, especially without magic. I didn’t even have the energy to siphon more magic from Arion.

The vampires knew. They grinned and took turns reaching for us. All of them were careful to avoid Walker’s flame. One cut his arm open, and the vampires hissed in anticipation.

This was it—the end.

I weaved my fingers through Walker’s and squeezed.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered to him.

“Enough toying, children,” the Master declared. I couldn’t see him past the swarms of pale, ravenous faces. “It’s time to feed!”

Chapter Eighteen

Walker

At least Arion will get Cadence out of here.

I squeezed Freya’s hand and prepared myself for the onslaught of vampires. If I would die, I would take as many of them out with me. The Master commanded them to attack. I raised my torch a little higher and fought the urge to close my eyes.

Boom!

Past the herd of vampires, stone exploded across the hall. Amid the dust and stone appeared a huge saber-toothed tiger with a wild-eyed girl on his back.

Cadence.

My stomach fell to the floor.

As she released a war-cry, my baby sister didn’t even look afraid. While Cadence pelted the vampires with rocks, Arion attacked them with his own fangs.

“Move!” Freya snapped.

More motivated than ever to escape, I used the distraction to my advantage and attacked as many vampires as I could with my torch. With every one that turned to ash, I was one step closer to the hall that Arion and Cadence had busted through.

One step closer to escape.

Freya fought ruthlessly beside me. She punched, kicked and elbowed vampires then shoved them into my line of fire. We gained a rhythm in the chaos—if a vampire attacked her, I would attack it and vice versa.

Ash rained in the hall.

The putrid scent of death and smoke burned my nostrils. I didn’t have time to risk a glance at Cadence, but rocks zoomed past me, so I trusted she was still alive and fighting.

Crazy kid.

I couldn’t say I didn’t love her all the more for it.

Finally, we neared the dungeons—our avenue for escape. Only ten or so vampires stood between us and the exit, but more of them were pouring into the hall from behind us. It was now or never. We had to get out of here.

With a roar that shook the walls, Arion ran right into vampires in front of the dungeons and knocked them to the side. He charged down the hall, and Cadence ducked on his back so she wouldn’t get smashed by the ceiling. It was a tight squeeze for the overgrown cat.

“You fools!” the Master hissed. “I’ll get them myself!”

Freya and I wasted no time—we raced after Arion. Dim light shone at the end of the tunnel, past the cacophony of angry vampires. I could almost feel it against my skin.
