The chair, once whole, was now reduced to a mere stick in Damiano’s hand. He was breathing heavily, and I pulled him away from Gaetano to make sure his wound was still closed.

Gaetano groaned out in pain, his head dangling from side to side before he composed himself and let out a laugh.

“Why did you pretend to be my father when I came for the engagement?” I asked, getting straight to the point.

Gaetano let out a snarl.

“You fucking almost ruined everything I had been working for!” He shouted in resentment.

“I had everything planned out, the perfect plan! But people knew I had a daughter, so I faked your death as Althaia Volante because no one asks questions about the dead. You ruined it by showing up! I had to pretend you were my daughter, and I was doing it to protect my plan. I couldn’t risk anyone finding out you’re Russian. It would ruin everything for me if they thought I was cuckold by one of them.” His breathing came out loud and harsh in fury.

“So, I tried to get rid of you before it was too late. I always kept my eyes on you and hired people to do the job. I sent human traffickers, and I even cut that worthless piece of shit’s tongue to send a message that it was my doing.” He started to laugh hysterically.

My heart dropped. He almost succeeded in getting rid of me. He had pretended to care for me to my face, only to try to repeatedly stab me in the back the moment I turned away.

“Unfortunately for me, you already had protection. I had to focus on creating my army, and I was becoming bigger and more powerful. I was about to show it to the world by successfully taking down that Russian scum. Once I had his head in my hand, I was going to find you and your mother, and kill you all.” Gaetano’s eyes widened with joy.

“You ruined everything for me!” He suddenly shouted. “But at least, I got rid of the Devil’s spawn that was growing in your belly.” He laughed loudly.

I moved faster than ever before, grabbing Damiano’s gun before he could react.

I shot him.

Gaetano howled in pain as I shot him in the shoulder. I would not grant him the satisfaction of a quick death. No, I wanted him to suffer as much as he had made me suffer.

He had tried to take everything from me, making my life miserable. The sympathy that once clung to my heart was gone, replaced by anger and resentment. I wanted them all to pay for the pain they had inflicted on me and my loved ones.

I tilted my head at the way Gaetano was screaming, having the corners of my mouth turn upwards in contentment.

“I understand now.” I whispered to Damiano.

The satisfaction of hearing them scream in pain for all the suffering they had caused me felt euphoric at this moment. They had watched me bleed and laughed as I suffered.

Why shouldn’t I?

I glanced at Damiano, and he was already looking at me, his eyes darkened with that devilish smirk on his lips. He leaned in closer, speaking in a low voice meant only for me to hear.

“I never thought seeing you like this would make me hard as fuck.”

I gave him a sheepish grin, noticing the hint of lust in his eyes. I gave him a quick kiss before returning my attention to Gaetano, who was still screaming and panting in agony.

I grabbed him by the hair, forcing him to look into my eyes.

“What’s wrong? Why are you screaming? Take it like the big, powerful man you so generously talked about yourself as.” I taunted him, a smirk playing on my lips. “You failed, Gaetano, because I am carrying his child.”

I showed him the sonogram, watching his face turn red with anger. I leaned in to whisper to him.

“I will give him something you were never able to have—a biological child. I will give him an heir, a legacy that you so desperately sought, and I will even build a whole damn army of heirs so you can never rest in peace.”

“I wish they stabbed your womb to prevent you from having a child.” He spat out.

I gave him a chilling smile as I laughed.

“Damiano, where is Morella?” I asked, watching the panic flicker in Gaetano’s eyes.

“We’ve got her.” Damiano’s voice was laced with a sinister satisfaction.

“No! Leave her out of this!” Gaetano shouted at us, but I had no compassion left.
