“What do you mean?” I breathed out, scared that someone had taken my mother.

Alexei didn’t answer and turned his gaze to Damiano. I turned to face Damiano, who was looking at Alexei with a firm expression.

“Damiano, what is he talking about?” I asked. He kept his gaze fixed on Alexei before finally shifting his eyes towards me.

“Your mother is alive.”

Althaia was in shock.

She was so shocked that her body gave out, collapsing to the ground. I gritted my teeth as I shoved my pain aside, grabbing her and pulling her to me.

I didn’t give two shits about Alexei at this moment; my only concern was her. She looked numb, lost, as she tried to comprehend what I had just said. For once, Alexei remained silent, and his men stood by as he observed Althaia.

His daughter.

He hadn’t expressed his thoughts on the situation, about discovering he had a daughter. However, he seethed with anger toward her mother for keeping their child a secret.

For twenty-five years, he had lived oblivious to the fact that he had a child in the world. To compound his frustration, his daughter believed Gaetano was her father; an Italian man who had married her mother.

“Come on, breathe, Althaia… there you go… breathe.” She gasped for air, and I felt her entire body shaking against mine. Despite my own struggle to stand due to the pain, I held her tightly, knowing it wouldn’t be long before I lost consciousness again.

“Oh, damn it. Get her a doctor and tend to yourself. You’re useless to me if you’re dead.” Alexei sighed, even rolling his eyes in exasperation.

“If you pull some dumb shit, Vasiliev, you know what the consequences will be.” I warned him.

“You are in no position to make any threats to me.”

“Does it look like I give a fuck? Fuck up, and the blood is on your hands.” That was my final warning to him before we rushed to the car.

In the car, I was slipping in and out of consciousness. My heart raced faster than ever, and I could feel the blood dripping down from my stomach. Althaia was beside me, attempting to keep me awake by talking and tapping my cheek.

For half of the ride to the hospital, I couldn’t hear what she was saying; her voice sounded distant, as if she were far away.

I opened my eyes, seeing everything blur past me.

“…Surgery immediately!”

“Help him, please.” Althaia’s voice sounded out, causing me to frown at the sound of her crying.

“Don’t cry, my love.”

I felt her lips on mine; soft, light, and feathery, making my heart somehow beat even faster, spreading warmth inside of me.

Like a fire, keeping me alive.

“I love you.” She whispered, but I heard it loud and clear.

“And I love you, piccola.”

Suddenly, the world was swallowed by darkness.

I rested in the recovery room, listening to Antonio as he provided a detailed report. The surgeons had to work swiftly on me, considering I had pushed my body beyond its limits, and it nearly cost me my life.

“Everything is clear, and people are receiving treatment.” Antonio reported, and I nodded.
