The place erupted in cheerful applause as Cara and Lorenzo sealed the beginning of their marriage with a kiss.

“Have you seen Michael anywhere? I can’t believe he’s not attending the wedding.” Althaia’s brows furrowed as we entered the reception banquet. She scanned the area, but Michael was nowhere to be found.

“I haven’t.” I replied. His absence caught my attention, given that Gaetano usually had him by his side as his right hand.

Althaia let out a sigh.

“Why are you looking for him?”

“I forgot to call him back in Italy. I thought I would hear him out.”

“He didn’t call you again?” I questioned, and she shook her head.

Interesting.

“Don’t worry about it now. He’ll probably show up later.” I said, hoping to prevent her from overthinking and asking around for him.

“I guess. Well, I should say hi to my dad. I haven’t talked to him since we got here.” She let out a small, embarrassed chuckle and headed in the direction of Gaetano.

Gaetano stood with his wife and a few of his men, smiling as Althaia approached and hugged him.

I turned away from them, scanning the surroundings before pressing a small button on the inside of my collar.

“Keep an eye out for Michael. He might be lurking around.” I ordered before walking up to Althaia, not wanting her to be alone in their presence.

“Damiano! I see you snatched my little girl.” Gaetano smiled happily. I stared at him blankly, noting his unusually cheerful demeanor as he raised his glass. “May this only bring our families closer and more powerful.”

“Oh, darling! The ring is just beautiful!”

My jaw clenched at the horrendous high-pitched voice. Every time that woman opened her mouth, it felt like a bunch of knives continuously stabbing into my ears. I was convinced Gaetano was partially deaf. It was impossible he heard that voice and decided to marry it.

“Thank you, Morella.” Althaia gave a tight smile, and I could tell it was taking everything in her not to grimace.

“Wonderful news, figlia! When’s the big day?” Gaetano smiled widely.

“Oh, actually…” Althaia started, and my hand squeezed her waist a little, warning her not to let it slip out. She quickly glanced at me before facing Gaetano again with a soft smile. “…We haven’t decided yet. Plenty of time to figure it out.” She told him instead.

“Good, good. The sooner, the better.” He looked at me when he said that, not being discreet about his underlying message to me.

“Congratulations again, darling.” Morella smiled big.

“Enjoy the party.” I told them with a nod and led Althaia away from them. Hell, I was desperate to get away from that voice.

“We certainly will.” Gaetano replied.

Not for too long.

“What was that about?” Althaia asked me quietly when we stepped away from them.

“About what?”

“Why couldn’t I tell my father that we got married?”

“I thought you said you wanted to keep it a secret?”
