“Wait,” I say, grabbing his arm. “Where are you going?”
“There’s a Krispy Jelly joint about five miles from here,” he says. “They stay open twenty-four-seven. We’ll just go grab a box for you.”
“Seth-bear, you stay with Rory and keep her company,” Olivers says. “Si and I will go get the donuts.”
“Wait up!” I shout, waddling after them as they head out of the kitchen. “There’s a storm raging outside.”
“Ehh, it’s just a little rain,” Oliver says, grinning. “The babies can’t stay hungry just because of rain.”
“Are you guys sure about this?” I ask as Simon and Oliver grab their coats and pull on their boots.
“Hey, we’re soldiers,” Simon says, kissing my cheek. “If we can’t buy our baby momma a box of donuts, we’re worth nothing!”
A chuckle escapes me. “You guys are as crazy as these twins in my belly!”
Oliver bends down and kisses my swollen tummy. At once, I feel the babies kicking excitedly. They love their daddies.
Seth and I stand at the threshold as Oliver and Simon run out toward the car outside our fenced gate. A gust of wind buffets rain toward me, making me step back.
A sliver of anxiety wounds around my chest as I watch them get into the car and drive away. The sky is heavy with clouds and thunder growls in the far distance.
“I’m not sure this was a good idea,” I say.
Wrapping his arm around me, Seth closes the door and steers me back into the living room. “Don’t worry about them, honey,” he says in a soft voice. “They’re used to driving in rougher weather and much worse terrain.”
He makes me sit on the couch and pushes a cushioned stool under my feet. Warmth flares through me as I watch him take care of me.
“How about some hot chocolate?” Seth says.
Happiness bursts inside me at his suggestion. “Yes, please!” I cry out enthusiastically.
Seth chuckles and leans down to peck my lips. “Be right back,” he says, pressing his cheek against my belly.
“Ow!” I gasp as the twins kick enthusiastically. “Hey, settle down,” I mumble. “You’ll make Momma run to the bathroom again.”
An amused expression comes over my mate. Chuckling to himself, he walks away to the kitchen.
Soon, I’m sitting with a warm mug of hot chocolate in my hands. Seth has been generous with the number of marshmallows he’s added to my drink. I can’t help but feel happy and loved.
“It’s been a while since they left,” I say, looking toward the clock.
“It’s a forty-minute drive,” Seth says, sipping his drink. “I’m sure they’ll be back soon.”
A whiff of coffee floats into my nostrils. My nose screws up at the smell. I used to love coffee but somehow, my pregnancy makes me abhor it.
Seth takes a big gulp of his coffee and picks up the TV remote. “How about we watch something to pass the time?”
I nod, glad for the distraction.
“What would you like to watch?” he asks, flicking through the available shows and movies on the TV screen.
“Let’s watch Tangled,” I say, pointing at the screen.
“You love this movie, don’t you?” he says, selecting and playing the movie.
“Yep. It’s got both romance and adventure in it,” I say, grinning. “Also, I love the end scene when Rapunzel gets reunited with her parents.”
“Oh, come here,” he says, pulling me against him.
