“Thanks.” Luckily, she didn’t pop the tab, so I feel like it’s safe to drink. Thea’s story is weighing heavily on my mind and the last thing I need is to be drugged in the enemy’s house.

“I need to know something, Jay. You’re committed to the cause, right?” He asks, eyeing me suspiciously. I fight the urge to grill him on his “cause.”

“Of course, sir.”

“Then there is a special job that I need you to do. All these other guys are idiots, but you have a head on your shoulders. I can tell.” He leans back, resting his crossed arms on his stomach. “I think someone’s been talking. I’ve had the Sheriff poking around more than once now and I think we have a leak.”

My neck stiffens at the implication. I’m sure nothing that I’ve relayed to my command has made its way back here, so who else is talking? Curtis.

He’s got cold feet. I could tell in his car earlier that he was having a hard time with this. Could he be talking to someone about all of this besides me? Fuck. I hope not.

“What do you need me to do?” I ask, keeping my other thoughts to myself.

“Keep your ear to the ground. Find out if we have a mole then take care of them. I have important goals, and people counting on me. I can’t have anyone messing it up. You hear me?” He leans back toward me, too close for comfort. “Get it done.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll let you know what I find out.” I get up, downing my beer before I even make it out of the kitchen.

Fuck, this adds another level of complications to my life. Could someone else be leaking information?

I make a lap through everyone at the party, trying to find Curtis but he’s gone. I make a second lap, this time asking if anyone has seen him. It isn’t until I’m almost back to my truck that someone tells me he left with a girl.

Dawn is approaching by the time I write my reports and finish leaving messages for my unit. This time when I leave the motel, I bring the rest of my stuff with me. It’s only a duffle bag and laptop, but if I never have to step foot in this rat hole again, I’ll be thrilled.

Thea blinks awake as I walk into her room. “Hi,” I murmur, admiring her sleepy face. Her cheeks have lines on them from sleeping so hard and her hair is wild. She’s gorgeous.

“Hi.” She smiles and I almost fall to my knees. This woman.

“I didn’t mean to wake you up. I just got back.”

She pats the bed, so I sit down next to her, stretching my arm out over her legs to brace myself without touching her.

“I need to run anyway. Thanks for coming back,” she whispers, bashfully.

“You couldn’t get me to stay away if you tried,” I tease, but I mean it wholeheartedly. I don’t want to go anywhere.

“Do you want to run with me?” She laughs immediately at what my face must look like. I’m no stranger to working out, but running sounds terrible after being up all night.

“I would but I need to shower. If you don’t care,” I say, watching the way she eyes me up and down.

There is an obvious interest in the way she looks at me and it makes my dick hard immediately. This girl might be fearful of touch, but she is no stranger to sexual desires. She wants me and it’s making me crazy.

“Thea…”

“Hmm?” She locks eyes with me and realizes she’s been caught. She giggles, pulling the covers over her head.

“When do your toys come?” I ask her still-covered head.

“Sometime today.” Her voice is muffled through the blanket.

“Good.” I get up to go shower before she says something else that will make me want to fuck her.

I spend the rest of the day while she’s at work fixing her broken-down bathroom. Kyle’s an idiot but he didn’t destroy things too badly. He was lying about some things needing to be fixed, so all in all, the whole thing was done in a few hours. The only thing left to do is paint, but without further direction, it’ll have to wait.

I’m standing back, admiring my handyman skills when her doorbell rings. It’s the middle of the afternoon and I have to leave for my meeting at the library soon, so I consider ignoring it, but it rings again.

When I look through the peephole it’s blocked. I open the door with caution, not sure what to expect. The surprise visitor steps back as soon as I open the door, a Rollins County Sheriff’s Department patch staring at me.

“Good afternoon,” the stiff voice of none other than the Sheriff himself greets me.
