“Agnes, please.” There was a pause.

“And don’t thank me yet. We get a lot of traumas coming through our department. The work can be a lot to handle. That’s why we have an opening in the first place—one of our best trauma surgeons simply couldn’t take the pressure anymore.”

“Well, I can’t say for sure how I’ll handle it, but I’m willing to put in the work to ensure that I can balance the stress with appropriate relaxation activities in my personal life.”

Her traitorous mind immediately went into overdrive, envisioning a scene where she and Agnes helped each other relax after work—with a lot of tongue and very few clothes.

Cora!!! Stop it!!!

Nope. She was not doing that, not right now. She needed to appear competent and not like a bumbling idiot. Dr. Frame probably already had doubts about her ability to walk in a straight line without falling over. No reason to give her reason to be worried about her not being able to form complete sentences.

“That sounds very positive, Cora. If it’s alright with you, I’d like you to come in tomorrow to sign the contract, and then you can start immediately.”

“That’s perfect. I can’t wait.”

“I will see you tomorrow, then.”

Cora managed to hold in her whoop until she had hung up. She did a little jig on the spot to release her feelings. She couldn’t believe she’d actually done it. She’d landed the job at Sweet Hill’s trauma department, and she got to start tomorrow.

Not only did she get her dream job, but she got something else entirely unexpected: the chance to get to know the beautiful Dr. Agnes Frame a bit better and possibly explore the connection between them.

Cora couldn’t wait to get started.

Agnes

Agnes realized she was biting her lip and forced herself to stop. She still wasn’t sure she’d made the right decision, despite having her choice vetted and confirmed by three other doctors at the hospital.

She was torn in two directions. Logically, Dr. Cora Hope was the right choice. She was the perfect fit for the job. She was talented, enthusiastic and worked well with others. She would easily find her place here; Agnes was sure of that much.

Her internal objections were on a more personal level.

She knew she should never be glad of other people’s misfortune, but she couldn’t help being relieved that Cora had tripped over her chair during their interview. It had given Agnes an opportunity to compose herself, because from the moment Cora stepped into the room, Agnes had felt anything but her usual composed self.

She had felt like her heart might explode out of her chest. Cora didn’t look anything like Jackie, but the feelings she stirred in Agnes were achingly familiar, bringing Jackie to the forefront of her mind.

Ever since Jackie died, Agnes hadn’t felt attracted to anyone she met. She had been sure that she never would again. Even having those feelings for Cora felt like a betrayal, but she couldn’t lie to herself and pretend that Cora didn’t stir something deep within her.

With her wavy blond hair, pale blue eyes and athletic build, Cora looked like some kind of ethereal angel—a rather clumsy angel, but that just made her endearing as well as stunningly beautiful. There was a warmth to Cora that perhaps reminded her of Jackie. A genuine goodness that emanated from Cora and it brought something to the surface in Agnes that she had thought was long buried.

Agnes knew that it was deeply inappropriate to be having horny thoughts about her new employee, but the image of her kissing Cora had flashed into her mind and she couldn’t shake it.

The thoughts made her insides squirm guiltily as she thought of Jackie. It was eight years ago she had lost Jackie, but it still felt like just yesterday. That pain never really went away. People say time heals all wounds, but people are full of shit. Time has healed nothing, at least not for Agnes.

She was just going to have to make her peace with the fact that Cora stirred uncomfortable feelings within her.

A knock on her office door drew Agnes out of her troubled thoughts. “Come in.”

Of course, it had to be Cora. What was she doing here? Didn’t the people down in the ER get her settled? Agnes had been specific that they were to show Cora the ropes and make her feel welcome. She had been hoping it would be at least a few days before she had to face Cora and her own confusing feelings again.

“Hello, Cora.” Agnes hoped she was doing a good job of keeping her voice neutral and warm and not grimacing, but she wasn’t entirely sure that she was.

Cora’s blonde hair was up in a ponytail. Her bronzed skin glowed with warmth. She looked like a collegiate athlete. The all american girl.

Why on earth is she stirring these things in me? I want her to pin me against the wall and kiss me…

“Hey, Agnes. I just wanted to pop in and say hi. And, well, um thank you. I’m really very grateful for this opportunity.”
