For god’s sake!

Cora nodded. “Of course.”

“Lovely. And, please, call me Agnes. If we’re going to be working together, we should be on a first name basis.”

Well, that was a hopeful start. “Agnes, then. I’m a huge fan of your work—both your surgical history and your work in running this hospital.”

It wasn’t even an exaggeration to get into her good graces. Cora had found only good things about Agnes in her research.

“Thank you. I have to admit, I wasn’t aware of you before I got a call from Valerie, but now that I’ve looked through your case results, I’m actually surprised you weren’t on my radar before.”

“My colleagues are always bugging me to write papers and do clinical trials—things that will get me more on the map within the community—but I prefer to focus on my patients. I keep up with current research, but apart from that, I like to spend as much time as possible treating patients. Not that things like papers and studies don’t help patients in the long run as well, but I like a more hands-on approach.”

“That explains why I hadn’t heard of you before. Most doctors of your skill level would seek some credit for their work.”

“I get that, but that’s not really important to me.”

“Very humble of you.”

Cora shrugged and felt her face going red.

“Tell me more about why you want to work here.”

Now that was a line of questioning she was prepared for.

She went into her list of reasons for wanting to work at the Sweet Hill trauma department, which Dr. Frame seemed satisfied with. The interview went on with Dr. Frame asking all the standard questions. Cora couldn’t stop looking at the lovely openness of Dr. Frame’s face and watching the graceful considered elegance with which it seemed every move of Dr. Frame’s was made. Cora pulled herself back to earth and asked a few questions of her own, things she had noted to query during her research.

Within half an hour, they seemed to have covered everything relevant.

Dr. Agnes Frame stood up and Cora followed suit. Agnes was shorter than her, even in her heels. Cora noticed her delicate shoulders and the line of her collarbone and hint of cleavage she caught a glimpse of under Agnes’s cream blouse. “Thank you for coming in, Cora. I know I’m not really supposed to give feedback like this at this stage, but I must admit that you’re my favorite of the candidates I’ve interviewed so far. I’ve still got a few more interviews to do, but I will get back to you in a few days—hopefully with good news.”

Cora’s heart rose in her chest. This was more than she would have expected for this stage, and she had to struggle to contain her excitement as she shook Agnes’ hand. “Thank you, Agnes. I will wait for your call, then.”

“I’ll speak to you soon, Cora.”

Cora stumbled slightly over her own feet as she turned around, feeling Agnes’ ocean blue eyes on her. She wasn’t generally a clumsy person, but Agnes seemed to bring that out in her.

If Cora worked with her regularly, she was sure she’d get used to it. At least, she hoped she would.

She went back to her hotel and immediately messaged Ella, telling her how the interview had gone. Then, there was nothing to do but wait. If Cora was being smart, she would do some sightseeing or at least find something productive to do with her time, like research or going through patient files.

However, she found herself simply dwelling on Agnes. Cora had never met a woman as warm, beautiful and dignified as Agnes was. She was drawn to Agnes in a way she didn’t quite understand. She wasn’t sure if it was just the attraction, or if it was something else as well. Either way, she’d like to find out. If she got to work with Agnes, perhaps Cora would have a chance to get to know her a bit better.

So instead of doing anything useful with her time, she spent it daydreaming about Agnes and how things might go if she got the job.

Cora expected to wait a couple of days, but the very next day, she got a call from an unknown number. She answered it at once and was surprised to recognize Agnes’ calm considered lyrical voice on the other end of the line.

“Hello, Cora?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

“This is Dr. Agnes Frame from Sweet Hill. Are you free to talk?”

“Of course.” As if she was doing anything else right now.

“I’ve finished up with the last of the interviews and I’ve made my decision. The job is yours if you want it.”

It took a few moments for her words to sink in fully. When they did, Cora had to hold back a squeal of excitement. “Yes, I want it! Thank you, Dr. Frame!”
