He shot me a look. “I married your mother for love, Chasin.”

“The trick is staying in love, Dad.”

“I still love your mother,” he insisted. “I know that we seem more like a partnership these days, but I still love your mother.”

“Enough to walk away from Carver Industries?” I challenged. “Because that’s how much I love Jett. I love her enough to avenge her in a way that might send me to prison for the rest of my life. When I say that I love her more than anything, I mean just that.”

“Yet, you have no idea if she loves you the same way,” he pointed out.

“I don’t need her to love me the same way, Dad,” I informed him. “When a man really loves a woman, he will always love her more than she loves him.”

Deciding to leave the debate about love on the table, he said, “I’ll take care of the Morgans, and let them know to never go near Jett again.”

I gave him a terse nod. “Thank you.”

“What about the others?”

“If Officers Tisdale and Montgomery are good on their word, they’re being picked up as we speak,” I told him. “It was that or kill them all.”

“What do you need from me?”

“I need you to make sure that they don’t make bail, and I want their names splattered all over the news and internet with what they’re being charged with,” I told him. “I want them sitting in jail, labeled as rapists, and I want their families to drown in the shame of what those sonsofbitches did.”

“You know that it’s going to be impossible to shield Jett from this, right?”

“She can handle it,” I assured him.

“Well, alright, then,” he said. “I’ll get started now.”

“I’ll leave Jett a note in case she wakes up while I’m gone,” I said. “Do not be a dick to her if you find her wandering around the house.”

“Well, since Carver Industries doesn’t have a future if she’s not in it, then I can hardly afford to upset her, can I?” he drawled out sardonically.

“Well, while we’re on the subject, she’ll be living with us until we go to California,” I announced.

My father nodded. “I’ll make some calls and see if I can get her enrolled with you.”

I let out another sigh. “Thanks, Dad.”

“Don’t thank me yet, Chasin,” he replied. “This is going to get ugly, and I just hope she doesn’t get caught in the crossfire.”

“That’s what she has me for, Dad,” I told him. “To catch the bullets for her.”

Chapter 26

Jett~

I felt Chasin’s lips on my forehead, the feather-light kiss waking me up. I’d fallen right to sleep after the hot bath, but no matter how comfortable Chasin’s bed was, I wasn’t used to sleeping in it. I was still in a strange place with a boy that I had placed all my trust in, even knowing that the only person that I could truly depend on was me.

“Hey, baby,” he said as he pushed my bangs back from my face. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“I wasn’t sleeping too deeply,” I told him. “Strange bed and all.”

Chasin sat down, his hand running up and down over my hip. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired,” I admitted. “I’ll probably wake up feeling like I’d been run over by a truck, but as of right now, I’m just tired.”

He gave me a simple nod before saying, “My father’s here.” I started gnawing on my bottom lip with that news. “He knows everything, Jett. I told him everything.”
