Looking him in the same-colored eyes as his daughter’s, I said, “I’ll take that into consideration, though I can’t see any harm coming from being friends with your daughter.” I cocked my head a bit. “Unless, of course, there’s something going on that I am unaware of.”

He looked like he wanted to crush me beneath his shoe. “If you find her, have her call us.” He arched a brow. “Please.”

“Not a problem,” I lied.

Turning from her parents, I jogged back towards my car, more determined to find Jett. I wanted to find her before her parents did, and something told me that Mr. Morgan was going to pull out of their driveway to go look for her himself. Whatever was going on, he had a lot of balls to tell me to stay away from his daughter, and I was going to find out why.

Chapter 22

Jett~

The beeps were a steady lull of distraction from the police officers standing by my hospital bed. There were a lot of stuff that could be said about police officers these days, but it was clear that Officers Montgomery and Tisdale were one of the ones wearing the uniform for good.

When the EMTs had awoken me on the side of the road, I’d known that it’d been David’s doing. Whatever part of him that still strived to be decent had called 911 for me, and while I should have felt thankful for that small act, I really didn’t. As soon as the EMTs had revived me, Officers Montgomery and Tisdale had begun peppering me with questions, questions that I had refused to answer. Though that might have seemed combative to the officers that had just been trying to do their job, I’d been more concerned with protecting myself against accidentally blurting out something that I couldn’t take back.

As soon as we’d arrived at the hospital, Doctor Horn had done her thing, examining every inch of me, the new and old bruises putting that uncomfortable look in her eyes. When she had ordered a rape kit, I had stopped her. While I couldn’t swear that West hadn’t had time to rape me, I knew that they’d find Chasin still inside me if they’d conducted the exam, and I didn’t need that complication right now. If Chasin had been just a regular boy, then I wouldn’t have cared about the truth coming out. However, he was Chasin Carver, and that made all the difference.

I also knew why the police were standing in my hospital room, not caring about the rest that I so obviously needed. Like the thorough doctor that she was, Doctor Horn had ordered x-rays, blood panels, CAT scans, and everything else that the good citizens of Carver could afford. So, I had no doubt that she suspected some abuse happening, and by law, she’d had no choice but to let the authorities know, even if I was a legal adult. I was still in school, and Councilman Morgan was my father. Luckily, since I was coherent and a legal adult, they were leaving it up to me to call my parents when I was ready.

“Ms. Morgan, I know that you’ve been through a lot, but we can’t help you if you don’t tell us anything,” Officer Montgomery stated unnecessarily. “If you want the people who did this caught and arrested, then you need to tell us who they are.”

“Ms. Morgan, you have nothing to be embarrassed about,” Officer Tisdale added.

I looked up at his kind face, and the man couldn’t be more wrong. I had a lot to be embarrassed about, least of all, getting caught unawares. I knew that naming West, Archie, Reynaldo, David, and Bridgette wouldn’t be the end of it. They would account for the new bruises, but not the old ones. Plus, the hickeys on my neck also told another story. Of course, they could assume that I’d been raped, but the marks weren’t that fresh, and any investigator worth his salt could see that. Even if they couldn’t, the doctor could. Medical records didn’t lie, and mine were unfolding the truth horribly.

When I didn’t answer, Officer Montgomery tried a different route. “Doctor Horn told us that you refused a rape kit,” he said, his voice even and practiced. “Do you want to tell us why?”

“Would you feel more comfortable speaking with a female officer?” Officer Tisdale suggested.

I shook my head. “No.”

“Do you want to tell us about your other injuries, then?” Officer Montgomery asked. “The ones that aren’t from today?”

I shook my head again. “No.”

“Ms. Morgan, I’m not going to pretend to understand what you’re feeling right now, but whether you realize it or not, your father is rather important in this town. We can’t…we can’t just sweep what happened to you under the rug.”

I looked between both officers, and I knew that they were going to call my parents if I didn’t give them something. “Chasin Carver.”

If I wasn’t in so much pain, I’d laugh at how both officers paled at the mention of Chasin’s name. Whatever they’d been expecting, they hadn’t been expecting to hear his name, let alone go up against him and his family.

“Uhm…Chas…Chasin Carver did this to you?” Officer Montgomery asked, his voice no longer even or practiced.

I shook my head, the motion making me dizzy a bit. “No…no, not him.”

“What about Chasin, then?” Officer Tisdale asked.

“I need to call him,” I answered. “I need my phone, so that I can call him.”

“Why do you need to call Chasin?” Officer Tisdale asked.

“He’s probably looking for me,” I sighed, knowing that he was.

The officers exchanged a look before Officer Tisdale asked, “Would you feel better if he was here with you?”

“Not really,” I admitted. “But…he needs to hear what happened before he hears it from someone else.”

Officer Montgomery stepped closer to my bed. “Ms. Morgan, if Chasin Carver is the one that harmed you, or…or the one that’s been harming you, we can protect you from him.”
