"It has to be with the dress I'm wearing tonight." Perhaps I should have thought of that before making my selection.

"How about both and we'll split them?" The way he watched me while waiting for the answer almost made it seem like the question was him testing the waters.

A small smile lifted at my lips. "You have a deal. I'm having a coffee too, do you want a latte?"

"If you don't mind."

"All right, ordered." I slipped my phone back into my jacket pocket.

"How much do I owe you?" he asked.

"You don't, we're at work," I responded.

"All right, but I get the next one."

My heart did a little flutter at the response, and we hadn't even done anything more than have a brief conversation.

"I need to go check the information boards have been delivered. Are you okay here with your measuring?" It felt strange to just be leaving someone in the event space, but something told me it wasn't going to be an issue.

"I think I'll be fine." He flashed me a reassuring smile and headed over to do his thing.

Which left me to do mine. And I could get a lot done in the half an hour or so it would take the food to get here.

I checked over the information boards, relieved to see that whoever had put them together had a clear eye for graphic design. I should have checked them earlier so I had time to do something about them if they were wrong, but in this case I was right to trust Horus and his judgement.

That was one less thing to worry about, now there was just the food, drinks, guests, and general success of the event to worry about.

My phone buzzed, alerting me to the arrival of the food. Even the thought of it was enough to make my stomach rumble, and I headed out to collect it. My mouth watered from the savoury smells coming from it. I'd been looking forward to this all week, and I was going to make the most of it.

I made my way back into the event space, drawing a smile from Damien.

"Food's here."

"Oh good, I'm actually kind of hungry."

"What were you going to do if I wasn't here?" I asked, mostly because I was curious.

He shrugged. "Find somewhere nearby or go home, I guess. This is better. I found a blanket in the back, let me grab it."

He disappeared before I could say anything in response. I guessed there was nothing to say. He came back moments later and laid a blanket out on the floor.

"Thanks." I sat down and started unpacking the steaming containers of food.

"So if you didn't expect anyone else to be here, what were you going to do when your food got here?" Damien asked as he accepted the tub with the spinach pie in it and a wooden fork.

"I'd probably have just eaten between doing things," I admitted. "If I was ahead, I might have snuck out to go look at some of the animals, but don't tell Horus that."

"Because he wouldn't like you doing that on the clock?"

"He doesn't like the animals to get disturbed, which is fair, they've been through enough already by the time they get here. But that's why we're doing a fundraiser instead of opening the sanctuary up to the public. Whatever you do, don't suggest that to Horus."

Damien chuckled softly, a nice sound that I wanted to hear more of. "I was just planning on staying out of his way, if I'm honest."

"You'd probably be fine even if you got there. He's too focused on his animals to notice what's going on."

"Not exactly what I expected from a god of kingship."

"Ah, you did your research." Steam rose from the top of my moussaka, so I let it cool for the moment and opened the box of salad, setting it between us and gesturing to it with my fork so he knew it was a joint thing.
