Onus peered up. “Fucking soot bastard.”

Onus’s massive chiseled body flew into the wall to his right, landing with a loud thump.

Getting back to his feet, he rubbed his left cheek. “I think that was his foot.” He shrugged it off while pointing to Emma. “Selling her will hurt him more than he just hurt me.”

My heart raced, and my stomach threatening to purge its meager contents. “Onus, please. I’ve done nothing to interfere with your—”

“Now!” he yelled.

The door swung open, and two men came running inside, each wearing leather vests that read ‘Prospect.’ One was carrying a gas can, the other a propane torch.

I leapt to my feet, knowing I was under attack. I was ready to fight for Emma until I caught sight of Piercer through the open doors, yanking Anita inside his house. As soon as she saw me, we tried to step toward each other but stopped when gas was poured around her.

I screamed, “Onus! Stop!”

His warning was so heavy, it sucked all the air from my lungs. “Move. One inch. And watch her burn.”

To say I started to shake was like comparing a hurricane to a summer breeze. I didn’t even dare speak. My eyes begged a crying Anita not to move.

She froze, her body as rigid as stone.

Understanding that they had full control over us, Piercer away then stepped over the gas perimeter now circling the sweetest girl in the world.

Smiling like a proper devil warrior, Onus motioned to one of his men. “Go get her.”

While a stranger collected Emma behind me, two streams of painful tears slid down my trembling face. I dared a whisper, “Onus. Anything you want.”

“You’re suffering is all I need.”

Not moving a smidge, I assured him, “It is real.”

“Oh, yes,” he moaned in pleasure. “I can feel it.”

A sob escaped before my voice cracked my plea, “Let me keep her.”

“Not. A. Chance.”

Not wanting to further aggravate him, I only asked one more question. “May I say goodbye?”

As if annoyed, he flung a gesture to the man who had a sleeping Emma in his arms.

The little beauty was brought to me.

Before moving my hand, I looked to Onus for permission.

“Hurry up, bitch.”

Muscles feeling like bending steel, I slowly reached out to push silky blonde hair from Emma’s gentle features. Not sure I would be standing within the next twenty seconds, my heart was splitting in two. One half for her and one half for the girl about to burn because of me, I kissed Emma’s forehead and whispered, “Thank you for your sacrifice.”

“That’s enough,” growled Onus.

Lifting my hands in surrender to his demand, I didn’t move while she was carried away.

Once out the door, a weak hand reached out for Anita, but I was denied her, too.

Piercer lifted Anita to cradle her then carried her out the door.

As everyone left, except for Onus, my upper body folded, slobber dripping from my gaping mouth. The ache growing inside me was so intense my vision swayed.
