Page 140 of Hostile Fates

His voice lowered with a menacing warning, “We don’t take kindly to that.”

As confirmation, over two hundred bikes roared to life, their throttles high. It was so loud and powerful—such a statement—I felt the earth tremble under my feet.

Then all went quiet again.

Lynx cautioned, “I suggest you release her if you want to live to see your children and funds again.”

I had never heard Lorenzo exhale a shaky breath of fear before. And I never thought I’d see the day that he’d let me go.

But… he did.

Just like that, the mafia prince who had terrorized me for over nine years of my life released me and started walking backward toward the yacht, where I had once been a slave.

“You will be hearing from me,” Lorenzo promised, stepping over bodies while sounding farther away.

Lynx dipped his chin. “We both know this isn’t over. Be ready for your death, by my hands.”

Frozen in place, it felt like I was in some sort of time warp. Bending and reshaping, my hostile fate was now morphing into a fairytale of an ending.

Almost to the top of his private boat ramp, Lorenzo’s jaw ticked as he took one more glance at me, then disappeared onto his yacht.

Denial is a powerful beast, too.

Men I hoped to never see again were tossing ropes up to other men, then running up the same plank as the monstrosity was already pulling from the dock.

My past… was floating away.

Not moving his bike, “Say it,” growled Lynx, pulling my attention from the eerie sight.

I was barely able to breathe. “W-What?”

“Admit you’re worth it.”

I swallowed.

“Elle, say it.”

I wasn’t frightened of Lynx. I was afraid he was wrong. “I’m scared.”

His broad shoulders strengthened. “I’m not. Not anymore.”

Lynx no longer the frightened or angry little boy I had seen in my dream, air filled my lungs. Until that moment, I hadn’t realized his fear was the wrong companion for mine. I lacked a lot of worldly knowledge. I needed strength to show me the way of a new life.

Now that his fear was gone, there was room for… us: Lynx and Precious.

“Elle, you once told me I was special. I thought you were wrong, but I believe you now. I hope someday you will believe me, too.”

On that night, my soul told me I was a very lucky girl. Even though my life had been one heartbreak after another, I had now found… home. It was him.

I whispered, “Lynx.”

I think he heard my decision in my voice because his was full of relief as he replied, “Yeah, babe.”

“Thank you for coming.” I didn’t just mean this night. I meant thank you for entering my life and trying so damn hard to set it straight.

With the lights of all his brothers shining on us, Lynx started his bike. Over Bertha’s rumble of approval, he said, “Babe, now here is what I once told you. You can’t die until I say you can.”

Lynx knew me being with Lorenzo was death. Body, heart, and soul.
