Taking a bite of her burger, it was better than the one in the city. She moaned as the flavours filled her senses. “Oh my gosh, Zach. This is amazing.”

“Babydoll, I told you no one hears that sound but me.”

Skylar dropped her burger into her container as she stared at her husband. Standing in the doorway to the kitchen, he filled the doorframe with his body, dark brown eyes burrowing into her soul. Her heart beat out of her chest as she drank in his long dark beard, red and black plaid shirt that barely contained his strong body. He stood casually, but she knew from the intense look in his eyes he was anything but.

“You’re back.” Dazed, she couldn’t say anything else.

“I’m back,” Dyllan said flatly, not taking his eyes off her. “Eat your burger, babydoll.”

Knowing there were six other sets of eyes on them in the room, she slowly picked up her burger and took another bite leaving her questions for later.

Stalking over to the island, Dyllan pulled out the last container and flipped open the lid, pulling out his own mushroom cheeseburger. Skylar couldn’t help but watch in awe as he took a bite.

“Damn, babydoll, you were right. This burger is good.”

“Ugh, yeah.” Looking down at her own burger, she had suddenly lost her appetite. Her whole world had been shifted, bunched up and thrown away, and now she’s supposed to just sit here and eat like nothing had happened? Rage filled her body as she watched Dyllan eat like it hadn’t been days since they’d seen each other or a week since they’d actually talked. She couldn’t sit with their friends and act as if nothing had happened.

The tension was thick in the room with no one talking, all gazes ping ponging between her and Dyllan.

“I need fresh air,” she said, standing abruptly.

“Stay, Skylar.” Dyllan’s tone left no room for argument. Frozen to her spot, she narrowed her eyes at him.

“Or what, Dyllan? You’re going to leave again?”

“I think we should go,” Kade said, standing and grabbing her food.

“Smooth, bro,” Travis said, slapping Dyllan on the shoulder as he walked out, his arm around Lila.

“Try not to fuck it up even more, eh?” Brody said as he and Kade left.

Zach didn’t say anything, just shook his head as he carried his and Mandy’s containers of food and led her out.

With the soft click of their front door, Skylar crossed her arms over her chest. “Well, that was unnecessary. We were having a great evening until you got home.”

“I know. Who do you think arranged this, babydoll?” Dyllan raised his eyebrows with a smirk.

“Why would you do that? You can’t pick up the phone to call or text me, but you can ask Zach to make my favourite food?”

Dyllan rubbed his hands over his face and sighed. “Look, I’m sorry.”

“You’d better be,” Skylar huffed.

“Can I finish?” Dyllan barked.

Skylar waved her hand, letting him continue.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the job interview.”

Skylar let her body relax at his admission. “That’s a start.”

“I’m also sorry that I didn’t truly listen to you. I should’ve taken your feelings into account before I made any decisions, and I certainly shouldn’t have left the way I did.”

Skylar looked down at the ground, rubbing out an imaginary scuff mark on the floor with her foot. “Thank you. I appreciate that.”

“Most of all, I’m sorry that I made you think that you weren’t worth fighting for.”

The pain in Dyllan’s voice made her head snap up. “And now?”
