Brody: Don’t encourage him, Langston. Don’t you remember what he did with my apples?

Zach: I’ll have you know How Do You Like Them Caramels Apples Ale is one of our top sellers, thank you.

Brody: Must be the apples. It’s certainly not the name.

Travis: Guys, focus! We need to find Dyllan.

Travis: Now, if I were a grumpy bear, where would I be?

Zach: Not with his Goldie Locks. Mandy said she’s been a wreck this week.

Travis: Lila mentioned that too.

Brody: If you guys are going to chat like women, can you take me out of this group? If Dyllan wants to be found, he’ll come to us.

Travis: You’re no fun, bro.

Has Skylar really been a wreck? Had he missed that before he left? Knocking his head against the bed, he ignored a few more chimes from his phone. Closing his eyes, he drowned out the noise from his phone, and the words of his friends. He pushed aside the look of heartbreaking sadness on Skylar’s face the day she found the text from Andrew. He would never forget how she looked when she realized he’d had every intention of leaving her and taking the job.

Maybe it would’ve been easier just to give her the divorce.

His heart ripped in two just at the thought of that happening. No way in hell did he ever want to leave her, but he didn’t see how it could work if he stayed.

His phone rang, echoing off the silence of his room. Grabbing it, he swiped to answer and placed it at his ear. “Yeah?”

“Hey, it’s me,” Brody said from the other end of the line. “You got a sec?”

“Yeah, what’s up?” Talking to anyone was the last thing he wanted to do right now, but at least he knew Brody wouldn’t try and feed him bullshit.

“Look, I want to start off by saying I didn’t want to make this call, but I figured it was better me than Travis or Zach.”

“Go on,” Dyllan added, knowing that Brody was right.

“Where are you?” Brody asked.

“Ottawa.”

“Is this for the security job?”

“Yes.” Dyllan ground his teeth together, spitting the words out between clenched teeth.

“Are you coming home?” resignation laced his voice as he spoke.

“For now.”

Both were silent. Brody’s breathing was the only indication he was still on the line.

“Look, you can tell me to fuck off but—do you love her?”

What a loaded question that was. The answer was yes, with all his fucking heart, but he didn’t know what to do about it. “Yes.”

“Then get back to town, man. Skylar is hurting. I think you’re hurting too. At the very least, just come home and talk to her.”

“I thought you hated this gossipy bullshit.” Dyllan pinched the bridge of his nose as he listened to his friend.

“I do, but Kade is worried about Skylar, and not just in the regular way that she worries for everyone. She’s over here now, man, and she’s not doing well.”

“What do you mean?” Dyllan shot up, sitting on the edge of the bed. His heart was beating out of his chest, and as he fought the urge to pack everything and run to the airport that minute to see for himself.
