After what she’d meant to say as ’thank you’ but came out as ‘mmm you,’ Dyllan chuckled and crawled into bed, pulling her back to his front and draping his arm over her waist. He kissed her temple before settling in behind her.

“Sleep, wife.”

“Mmm, husband.”

Waking up startled, Skylar couldn’t figure out what the incessant buzzing was that had woken her up from her dream. Blurry eyed, she felt around on the nightstand beside her until she patted her phone, realizing if she cursed, that would be what she cursed at right at that moment.

Not looking at who was calling, she swiped to answer the call and placed the phone at her ear, throwing her other arm over her eyes to block out the sun streaming through the windows. “Hello?”

“Skylar? Did I wake you?” Lila’s chuckled. “You dirty dog, you spent the night with the town mayor, didn’t you?”

“What? Why would you say that?” Suddenly awake, Skylar sat up, shifting until her back hit the headboard.

“Mandy and I came by your hotel room to take you out for brunch, but Bert said you checked out days ago. What gives?”

“Uh… yeah, about that,” Skylar stammered.

“Lila, let’s set up a time with her tomorrow. I’m sure she’s resting after last night, like I told you.” Mandy’s voice rang out in the background.

“You know something, don’t you?” Lila said. “What are you two hiding?”

Not sure who Lila was asking, Skylar racked her brain for something to fill in. She didn’t want to put Mandy on the spot, especially being the one with Lila at the moment, but this wasn’t how she wanted them to find out about her and Dyllan. “Yes, I am at Dyllan’s but it’s not what you think. I, uh, couldn’t stay at the hotel any longer and Dyllan offered for me to stay with him.”

There, not quite the truth but not quite a lie either.

“Hmm, why not?” Lila asked. Skylar could just picture her face, eyes narrowed, probably arms crossed with the phone tucked against her shoulder.

“Why not what?” Skylar asked coyly, knowing full well what she was talking about.

“Stop talking around me. Mandy, do you know something?” Lila asked.

“Nope,” Mandy answered.

“You do!” Lila exclaimed. “Are you at Dyllan’s right now?”

“Yes, but…” Skylar answered, wide-eyed as she around the room. For the first time, she noticed Dyllan wasn’t in bed with her. His side was unmade, everything else in its place like it always was.

“We’re coming over. Make sure you aren’t naked and having crazy monkey sex,” Lila huffed. She could hear shuffling and muffled words from Mandy.

“Lila, you really don’t need to come over.”

“Oh, yes, we do. You aren’t getting out of this. See you in a few.” Lila said something muffled to Mandy before coming back on the line. “No monkey sex when we get there!”

Skylar rolled her eyes as the call ended. Looking around, she didn’t see any trace of Dyllan. Dragging herself out of bed, she turned to immediately make the bed behind her, knowing that’s what Dyllan always did. Throwing on denim shorts and a tank top, she put her hair in a bun and made her way out to the kitchen. The smoky scent of coffee washed over her, making her smile and close her eyes.

“Dyllan?” she called out, making her way to the counter. An empty mug sat next to the coffee pot, which had been set to the warm setting, and next to it, she found a note.

Had to go to the office.

Be back later.

-D

That wouldn’t be anything special to anyone else, but Skylar was starting to understand that things like that were how Dyllan showed he cared. He wasn’t into PDA, or words of affirmation. No, he showed his love language in acts of service. It made Skylar smile, knowing that he’d gone out of his way to write this note for her when he didn’t have to. Sure, they were legally married, but in terms of an actual relationship, she had no freaking clue where they stood.

Pouring her coffee, she added a little cream just in time for the pounding knock to come at the door.

“This is your last warning to be decent, Skylar!” Lila laughed from the other side of the door.
