“Of course I’m worried. Winter is one of mine.”

Sasha stepped right up into my space, her perky tits brushing my arm as she got in my face. Her body was shaking. My brow furrowed in confusion. I got that she was angry—seemed to be a perpetual state when dealing with me—but I honestly didn’t understand what I’d done to set her off this time.

I’d come to apologize for fuckssake.

“Look, Sasha.” I put my hands on her shoulders, intent on putting a little space between us. My arms didn’t cooperate. In fact my muscles bunched, ready to pull her closer. “I’m thankful that you helped take care of everyone while you were with the Bone Crushers but you can relax now. I’m the alpha here. I’ve got this, okay?”

Her eyes narrowed to dangerous slits and her eyes flashed with murder. “I’m going to need you to say that again in my good ear, alpha,” my mate sneered. “‘Cause it sounded like you were being a patronizing ass and I just couldn’t have heard you right.”

She took a step closer, pressing her advantage. My wolf howled in delight, begging her to claim it all. To eradicate the unnecessary distance between us and rub her scent all over our body. It took everything in me to push her back a step just so I could think.

Clearly, the infuriating woman was in no state to listen.

I guess my apology will have to wait ‘til morning.

I side-stepped her fury and headed to my office, refusing to have it out with my mate on the stairwell where anyone could hear us. I’d already embarrassed myself in front of my people enough for one night.

“I’m not finished,'' Sasha shouted as she slammed the fat of her fist on the wall behind me.

My shoulders tensed and I turned very slowly, my movements fluid and deadly.

The animal inside me was going insane with the thought that I was planning on walking away, battering at the walls of my mind. He was all set to snatch my mate off the floor, wrap her legs round my middle, shove that nightie up over her delectable hips, and fuck her good against that concrete stairwell.

Right here, where the entire pack would get a snout-full in the morning as they came down for breakfast.

While my wolf howled in delight at the idea of such a lewd claim, somehow I didn’t think Sasha would appreciate our business being on display like that. And, quite frankly, the taste of her pleasure—because I would fucking make her come so hard her eyes rolled into the back of her head—was not for public consumption.

Sensing the change in my demeanor, my mate stood stock still, eyes big as saucers. She knew she’d pushed me too far. Her pulse was beating furiously—but in fear or anticipation?

This was a clusterfuck just waiting to happen. Time to extract my animal from this powder keg before he slipped my tenuous hold and proved I wasn’t even remotely a gentleman.

“We are not having this discussion here, Sasha,” I said, very slowly. Given I’d just been telling myself to get the hell out of dodge, the next words that left my throat were a surprise. They sounded suspiciously like an invitation. “You want to fight? Fine. But we’re doing it in my office.”

I turned and started making my way quickly down the stairs. If my mate planned on going toe-to-toe with an alpha wolf then she’d better learn to keep up. Sasha followed, her bare-footed steps less aggressive than moments before.

“I shouldn’t have shouted,” she murmured.

I held the door open for her and closed it behind us.

“Look,” I began, then trailed off with a sigh.

I honestly had no idea what to say.

How could I make a human understand the insane pull of the Chaos? The way the magic got into your head? How it fucked with not only your hormones, but your heart and soul as well? The Blood Moon only reigned for a week, yet actions taken under its influence had to be lived for a lifetime.

I rubbed my hands over my face, exhaustion creeping in. It had been a long fucking day and Sasha’s intoxicating scent confined in a smaller space—a room my wolf very much saw as his inner sanctuary—was already doing a number on my senses.

No matter what we decided to do—or not do—about the mating bond, I had some important things to get out first. It was high time my mate and I cleared the air.

There wasn’t room for two leaders at the top. One of them had to give.

“I get that you were the strong one,” I tried again, wrestling the lustful desires of the Goddess to the back of my mind so I could get the words out clean. “Back with the Bone Crushers—”

“We were all strong,” she shot back, eyes daring me to contradict her.

I nodded but held up my hand to let me finish. She mimed zipping her lips together causing me to shake my head. “You see them as yours but they aren’t,” I continued. “They’re their own people. That’s the thing about leading, Sasha. You only get the privilege as long as they look to you.”

My mate blanched as the meaning sunk in, but she didn’t back down. Good, I loved that about her. Despite what it sounded like, I wasn’t here to be the asshole. I wanted her to get this. So she could do right by those who needed her and let go of those who didn’t.
