She reached out suddenly, unable to contain herself, cupping her hands around my face and pulling closer to me. “Then let me be here with you. Let me support you. Don’t push me away, Wesley.” Then she kissed me.

Her lips melted my entire body. I remembered the night before, lying together, picturing my life with her. Her family’s disapproval had been so far from my mind. I had believed that as long as she wanted me, we could overcome anything.

Turns out, that wasn’t the case.

When the kiss broke, Cara lingered near my face. Waiting for me to say something, to change my mind.

But I couldn’t.

I tenderly removed her hands from my face and put them in her lap. “I’m not completely deserting you. I’m still going to help you with the daycare. And perhaps we can revisitus…later. Me and you. If you want. But right now, I need to put all of my energy into Lucy. And you have to put your energy into your work. So for now, let’s say your two months are up.”

Cara’s jaw dropped. Her body recoiled and she looked like she was in pain, as if I’d slapped her across the face. Her mouth opened and shut a few times as she searched for words she could not find.

“I’m so sorry.”

Cara put her hand over her mouth, eyes shutting tightly, and tears began to stream down her face.

“Cara, please, believe me when I tell you this is the last thing I —”

“I knew you’d do it again.”

I stopped. “What?”

Her jaw tightened and her hands balled into fists. “You broke my heart once because of Lisbeth. I knew it was only a matter of time before you’d do it again.” She tilted her head back, taking deep breaths in an attempt to abate the tears . “And to think I…”

Silence.

“To think you what, Cara?”

She shook her head.

“Cara —”

Abruptly, she stood up, the chair skittering behind her and falling with a crash. She tore off to the front door.

I followed in hot pursuit. I couldn’t let her go like this. But how couldIeverlet her go? There would have been no good way. I didn’t want to let her go at all.

But wanting and needing are two different things.

“Cara, please wait!”

She threw open the front door, bounded down the steps, and into her car. I made it to her passenger side window before she was able to pull away.

“Cara! Don’t leave like this!” I knocked on the window desperately. “Please talk to me!”

The window whirred downward. Cara’s eyes were facing squarely forward.

“Cara, don’t think for a second this isn’t difficult for me.”

She blinked. “I find that hard to believe.” Then she looked at me. Her expression was cold. Full of disdain. “I should have known better. All you do is use people up, and once you’ve taken them for all they have to offer, you spit them out.”

I couldn’t believe my ears.Is that what she really thinks of me?

“Get away from my car.”

If she had been saying it to anyone else, I would have thought she was amazing. Strong, gutsy, determined. But her anger directed at me was visceral, painful. It tore me apart. I stepped back from the window.

Stunned, I watched the car drive off down the street at a pace much too fast for a residential area.
