It was best to stop before we became even more entangled.

Cara folded her hands on the table. I couldn’t believe how far away she felt. Just last night, in her bed, I had felt our souls become one. “Um, this isn’t easy, but —”

“Can I go first?” I hadn’t meant to interrupt, but I couldn’t hold back. If she was about to say she loved me or something similar, I couldn’t handle hurting her after such a revelation.

Her eyebrows jumped. “Oh. Okay.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to interrupt you, I just —” I reached across the table and wrapped my hands around hers. “This isn’t easy for me to say.”

Cara stared at me expectantly, her eyes questioning.

“Today I was served custody papers from Lisbeth. She wants to revisit our custody agreement.”

Cara gasped, shock on her face. “Oh my God.”

I nodded. “It’s…I’m a wreck over it, honestly.”

“Wesley, I’m so sorry.”

Oh God, don’t be nice to me. Don’t be nice when I’m going to do what I’m about to do. Rip off the Band-Aid, Wesley.“You know that Lucy is my world.”

Cara’s concern turned to caution. Her back straightened. Preparing for the blow.

“Of course, I know that.”

“And I need to make sure nothing gets in the way of her being with me. Even Lisbeth.”

“Yes.”

“If Lisbeth even got a whiff of something happening between us —”

She retracted her hands from mine and put them in her lap. Her eyes hardened. “I understand.”

“Trust me when I tell you, I had no intention of doing this again.”

“I believe you.” Her lower lip was trembling.

“But between Lisbeth and dinner last night —”

“I’m sorry about my parents’ behavior, but please don’t end things because of that.”

I pulled my chair closer to her. All I wanted to do was wrap my arms around her, kiss the hurt away, apologize for even suggesting we call it quits. But the damage had already been done. “It’s not them. But you shouldn’t have to choose me over them.”

“You didn’t want me to?”

“That’s not what I said, Cara.”

“Then why are you —”

“I know what it’s like. To be a parent and want what’s best for my daughter. That’s not a connection you should sever. Not ever.”

Cara looked away. “Don’t act like I’m not mature enough to know what I want.”

“I…that’s not what I meant. I just shouldn’t have let you leave with me.”

“Letme?” Her chest was heaving with deep, angry breaths. “You don’t control my decisions.”

“No. I don’t. And I never meant —”
