Wesley laughed. “You seem awfully happy about it.”

“Because I am. Is that crazy?”

He shook his head and planted a kiss to my forehead. “Not at all. That’s exactly how I hoped you’d feel.”

The elevator beeped as we descended, floor after floor. Wesley wrapped his arms around me and held me close to his chest. “I’m awfully happy about it, too.”

God, he knew all the right things to say. I clung to him, burying my face in his chest.

“I love you, Cara. You don’t have to say it back, but I want you to know that I —”

“I love you, too.”

Our eyes met.

I repeated the words carefully, attempting to see if I truly believed it. “I love you, too.”

I really did.

Just then, the doors slid open at the ground floor.

But something in Wesley’s eyes told me we weren’t just going to walk out of the building as though nothing important had just happened.

He pulled on my hand. “Come on.”

We left the bank of elevators and quickly darted into a hall off the main lobby where there was a single occupancy bathroom. Wesley pulled me into it, locked the door behind us, and pushed me up against the wall, kissing me fiercely.

“Sorry,” he whispered against my lips and continued to kiss me.

“Why are you sorry? Don’t be sorry.”

“I don’t want you to think this is all you are to me. You’re so much more, Cara. But I just had to touch you, feel you against me.”

I let my lips hover over his as I took in his words.

“You’re the love of my life. Mother of my child. Both of my children, really.”

Wesley’s hand slid down to my waist. Elation filled my body. I never thought I’d get to feel him touching me like this again. I thought we were done for good.

But here we were. Savoring thoughts of our future.

“I’m here for you. I’m going to prove it every day.”

I put my hand on his, feeling the nonexistent bump of my belly. “I can’t wait.”

Wesley smiled and then pecked my lips. “What about your parents?”

“I told them they could go fuck themselves.”

He laughed loudly. “Who is this woman in front of me?”

I took a deep breath and smiled. “She is her own woman. Utterly and entirely.”

Wesley lifted his chin, sizing me up. “Yes. She is.” He put his lips to my ear. “And she’s amazing.”

His lips trailed down my jaw, to my neck, each kiss accompanied by another compliment. “Wonderful…incredible…perfect.” I could have listened to him praise me all day.

For once in my life, I believed those words. I was every one of those words. All because I had chosen myself and my life over what those around me wanted.
