“You paid her to be there.”

Cara interjected. “I would have chosen her either way.”

Breathe, Wesley. Don’t lose it now.

Lisbeth looked between us and then shook her head. “Fine.” Without another word, she stood and gathered her purse and coat. “I’ll be in touch to figure out a better arrangement.”

Yves followed at her heels. I almost felt bad he was beholden to her every emotional whim. But better him than me.

I stood to meet her at the door before she left. “And I’ll be more than agreeable.” I held out my hand to her. A promise. “I’m good on my word. You know that.”

She couldn’t begrudge me on that point, at the very least. Lisbeth took my hand in hers. No hug, no kiss. We could be amicable. It didn’t mean we had to be friends. Yves took my hand next.

Then, without another word, they left.

As soon as the door shut behind them, I couldn’t help letting a cheer burst out of me.

Chapter35

Cara

The moment the door closed, Wesley let out a cheer. I leaped up to join him, embracing him. His lawyer, who I’d only just met, threw his arms around us. We did our best not to scream too loud in our happiness.

Lucy was his. Maybe someday, ours.

After working through logistic details with his lawyer and the mediator, we collected our things and headed for the elevator.

“I’m sure you two have a lot to talk about.” His lawyer patted him on the back. “Take your time. Take a breath. You earned it.”

Wesley shook his hand. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”

“Don’t thank me. You two did all the work.” The lawyer winked.

The elevator dinged open and Wes and I stepped inside. He pressed the button for the ground floor and the doors rolled shut.

Leaving us in a thick, desperate silence.

Our hands had not unlocked from the moment I arrived.

“Thank you.”

I looked up at him. “You’re welcome.”

“I couldn’t have done that without you.”

“Yes, you could have.”

“No. I really couldn’t have.” Wesley lifted my hand and kissed the back of it.

There was still so much unsaid, so many things we had to talk about. But for now, we could enjoy in this victory.

“How are you feeling?”

I chuckled. “Why does that feel like a loaded question?”

“Because it is.” His eyes dropped to my midsection and then darted back up. “You’re pregnant, after all.”

Just hearing him say it made me smile. “I’ve been feeling horrible.”
