“Smoke isn’t there with you, is he?”

“No. I sent him home in case Tavy decided to come by and yell at me in person.”

“So, there was no drink throwing. Was there yelling?”

“Kind of. We were in public so that kept everyone’s behavior in check.” I paused. “She accused Smoke of taking advantage of me.”

“Ouch.”

“He didn’t,” I hastened to assure her.

“I know he didn’t. That has to hurt, though.”

“Yeah.” I bit my lip. “I’m not sure how this is going to shake out. I hope with some time she’ll come around. But even if she does, it’s not like I can sit and gossip with her about him. That would be weird.”

“So, you’ll go to other friends for that. What are you doing now? You want to come hang out? There’s a Turkish drama that looks really good. I’ll wait to start it.”

I smiled even though she couldn’t see me. “Nah. I think I’ll go to bed. Clearly, Tavy isn’t coming over to yell at me. Might as well try and get some sleep.”

“Okay, but the invitation stands. Even if you come over at two in the morning—which I’ll probably be awake because of Cash.”

“Good to know. Thanks, Rach.”

“Anytime.”

We hung up and even though my mind wasn’t completely at ease, at least it was lighter.

A knock on the door stole my attention.

Smoke!

I rushed to the door and threw it open, smiling widely.

“Hi, honey. You miss me?” Knox’s large form filled the doorway, a sinister grin spread across his handsome face.

Chapter 42

I attempted to slam the door, but Knox wedged his arm in the doorjamb, thwarting my efforts.

Cold terror filled my bones and my flight instinct kicked in.

I turned and ran, grabbing my cell phone off the counter as I dashed into the bathroom. I locked the door as fast as I could, but the lock was a joke and wouldn’t keep an angry man at bay for an extended period of time.

With trembling fingers, I unlocked my phone and called Smoke, praying he answered. It rang and rang, and just as his voicemail came through the phone, the bathroom door splintered off its hinges.

I recoiled in fear and the phone slipped out of my fingers and clattered to the tile floor.

Knox’s face was red with fury and his fists were clenched by his sides. He embodied the spirit of an irate bull. Irrationally, I expected horns to spring from his head and steam to billow from his nostrils.

He pushed the damaged door aside and it drunkenly slid out of its hinges to crash to the ground. Knox marched into the small space and blocked my ability to escape.

He reached for me and wrapped his hands around my upper arms and shook me like a rag doll.

“You think you can leave me?” he snapped. “You don’t leave me. We’re gonna be together forever. We’re getting married.”

“It’s over, Knox,” I yelled, my teeth clacking together.

“It’s never fucking over,” he hissed.
