CHAPTER 26
“Chill the fuck out.”
I pace back and forth in the break room, my eyes darting to the door every few seconds to make sure I remain alone.
“J, if we get caught because you didn’t listen…” I snarl, letting my threat trail off.
“What does it matter if she was working or not?” he counters.
“It matters. If for no other reason than that’s how we planned things. You don’t switch shit up in the middle of the con.”
“Fine,” J huffs. “I’ll be more careful.”
Heaving a sigh, I run a hand through my hair. A creak reaches my ears, and I whirl around to face the door. The entry is empty, but I move to peek into the hall just to be sure.
“Can you believe they thought a trojan horse would stop us?” he asks, laughing. “Cash deposits get the job done just as well… idiots.”
I shake my head. “Yeah, I believe it. You’re sure nothing can be traced back to us? Please tell me you at least wore a disguise when you made the deposit. There’re cameras, ya know?”
“I’m sure. And yes, I did. They might be good, but I’m better.”
I hope so.
“We need this to last another few months,” I remind him. “Once we hit our target amount, we’ll move on.”
“Any thoughts on where you wanna go next?”
“Not the fucking desert.”
“What about Florida?” J asks. “With all the spring break destinations, we’d make a killing.”
“That’s one option.”
“You got a better idea?”
“At the moment, no.” I take a deep breath. “Let’s just focus on this job. We can plot the next one once we know we’re in the clear.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
“And for now, hold off on electronically transferring any more funds,” I instruct. “I’ll stick to cash in the bar.”
“You just bit my head off for going the cash route,” he reminds me.
“I’m not gonna deposit anything, J,” I say with exasperation. “I’ll keep the cash stashed at my place for now.”
“You sure you can make them believe it was her again? They seem to have her back.”
“I’ll figure something out.”
I have to. If J and I wanna stay out of jail, I’ll have to make this work.
