Shane kissed the top of my head. “Let’s hope everyone is in a good mood today.”

As we walked, my stomach tightened in a million knots. I had to tell Minsi and Tyren about my situation, but honestly, I couldn’t bear it. I knew this would cause Minsi to have another breakdown, one that would be close to impossible to come back from. And Tyren … I had no idea how Tyren would react, I knew it wouldn’t be too good.

In the end, when we arrived at the house and were greeted by our family with such love and affection, and everyone was in such a great mood … I chickened out once more.

At least, we had a great time together.

Early the next day, Shane and I walked from our suite to the library. He wanted to spend the day researching about how to save me. I appreciated it more than words could say, but I also had a deep feeling that he was wasting time. He had to worry about our pack and their future. I knew he had to do this, so I sat with him behind one of the large tables full of old books while we waited for breakfast. We probably shouldn’t eat in the library, but Shane didn’t want to waste one minute.

Morris personally brought us the food with a white rose and a special cake. “I made it just for you, ma chérie.”

Beside me, Shane growled. I gave him a “really?” look before getting up and embracing the old vampire. “Merci.”

Morris pulled back, his eyes filling with tears. “Anything for you.”

“Are you okay?” I asked, concerned.

“It’s just … you reminded me of my daughter. She had long, pretty hair like yours, and her eyes were dark green. But your kindness and your contagious smile, they are like hers.”

His daughter … she might have died a long time ago. Poor Morris. “I’m sorry.”

He shook his head. “Don’t be. Even though she thought I was gone, I made sure she lived a long, happy life. She died of old age and I was right there.” He smiled at me. “And now I can look at you and relive those precious moments in my head.”

“Then I’m glad.” I took a big bite of the cake to please him and it melted in my mouth. “It’s divine.” It really was.

The old vampire left with a satisfied glint in his eyes.

I put another big bite of cake in my mouth and moaned.

Shane cocked an eyebrow. “I don’t know if I should be jealous of the cook or the cake.”

I swallowed. “Both, probably.”

With a grunt, Shane gave in and took a bit of the cake too. “Shit, okay, it is good.” He shoved more in his mouth.

I laughed.

My phone vibrated with a new text.

Thea: I’m heading out.

Me: Be right there.

Shane swallowed and frowned. “It’s time?”

I nodded.

Last evening, after I got back from the village, Thea had asked if I wanted to take a day off, but I told her no.

“Eventually, I’ll face Paimon, and when I do, I want to be ready,” I had said.

I ate two more bites of the delicious cake, drank half a cup of coffee, and turned to Shane. “I’ll see you for lunch, right?”

With a small pout, Shane nodded.

I pressed my lips to his in a quick peck, then stood and walked away before I lost it and melted into him. The last few days had been hard on us. We both wanted to rip our clothes off, but because of this damn dragon’s magic, we couldn’t.
