Thea held his arm, her eyes wide.

The portal trembled and something came through.

I called my wolf, ready to pounce.

Then the portal closed.

What?

We rushed forward. The something that had come through the portal were two people, tangled in a heap. Two demon hunters.

Erin and Rey were the first to reach them. Drake, Thea, Raika, and I were next.

“Oh, no,” Raika said, pressing her hand to her mouth.

Rey turned the male demon hunter's body, and laid it on the ground. There was blood everywhere, and his eyes stared up at the sky, unmoving.

The female demon hunter wasn’t much better. Erin cradled the hunter’s head on her lap and smoothed the blood from her face.

“Talk to me, Letty.” Erin’s voice broke. “What happened?”

“H-he got us,” Letty croaked. “Paimon g-got us when we were patrolling.” She took in a shaky breath. “He wanted us to send you a message.”

Erin shook her head. “You don’t need to tell me now. We’ll get you to a healer, okay?”

“I … I don’t have time,” Letty gasped. She clutched Erin’s arm. “He said that none of y-you can trick him.”

“Thank you for telling me this.” Erin gently disentangled Letty’s hand from her arm and set her down. “The healer is arriving. Just hang on, okay? Hang on a little—”

Letty’s head lolled to the side, and her eyes turned glassy.

Erin inhaled sharply. Raika gasped again. Everyone stood there, watching two dead demon hunters.

Hadrian held his Dawnblade tight and roared, “Paimon, I swear on my life, you’ll pay for this!”

Hadrian, Erin, and Rey blamed themselves for what had happened, but the only one to blame was Paimon.

We didn’t ease up on the portal after Paimon sent the two demon hunters back to us. Drake and Keeran said that the moment we left, Paimon would come. Some suggested we should leave, so he could come. We would turn around and attack. Others said we had enough for the day and called it quits.

A large number of demon hunters, vampires, and witches stayed behind, in case the demon decided to attack. If that happened, we would all jump through a portal and be there a few seconds later to help.

Meanwhile, we were sent back home to rest.

How did we go home and lie in our beds after what happened? Knowing Paimon was out there? Knowing all he had done in the past?

After bidding good night to our friends, Shane and I walked back to the village, hand-in-hand. Since now I had more control over the dragon’s magic, I had been allowed to return to the village for short periods of time. Right now, it was to have dinner with our family. And then I was right back at the castle.

I patted the extra elixir in my pocket. I didn’t go anywhere without it now.

“Are you okay?” Shane asked, breaking the silence.

I looked up at the blue sky. We still had another hour, maybe one and half hours of sunlight left, and it felt so good to be outside—not too hot, but hot enough to feel the warmth of the sun on my skin.

“I’m feeling terrible for those two demon hunters. Their families. For Erin, Rey, and Hadrian.” I sighed. “But otherwise, I’m okay.” I leaned my head on his shoulder. “Having a nice meal with our family will cheer me up.”
