Shane stiffened. He caught my teasing, but didn’t relax. “When you’re better, I’ll introduce you to him.”

Hm, he probably wasn’t handsome or Shane wouldn’t offer to take me to him.

We finished eating, put everything aside, and snuggled in the bed, making time until it was time for my training. Our backs on the bed’s headboard, with pillows under us, I propped a heavy book on our legs and started reading it while Shane messed with his phone.

Dragon History 101 depicted the little we knew about dragons, and from what I had learned, it was wrong, since this book also mentioned dragons had gone extinct almost a thousand years ago, and dragon shifters were gone as well.

This book elaborated on how dragon shifters came to be. The story told of a human who, instead of hunting the dragons, tried to help them. In doing so, this human, a young woman named Alice, was also hunted by other humans—and the supernaturals who wanted the dragon’s powers. In an ambush, she was fatally injured. To save Alice, one of the dragons, Galzrer, gave her half of his magic—and performed a ritual to have the human’s body accept those powers. Alice became the first dragon shifter, the most powerful of all. After her death, she was revered as a deity and praised by the entire dragon shifter and dragon races.

Shane lowered his phone. “Anything interesting?”

“I guess.” I flipped the page and saw a crude family tree of Alice and her offspring. Under the graphic was a short text:

When a dragon shifter has a child with another species, that child becomes 100 percent dragon shifter. However, in rare cases, if the child is born from a strong supernatural, she may retain their powers too.

“Very interesting,” I muttered.

I continued reading the book, skimming the pages, but nowhere did it elaborated about when the dragon magic was stolen, or split in two.

One thought stayed with me: Galzrer had given Alice half of his magic and performed a ritual. Then she became a dragon shifter. I had half of a dragon’s magic. If we performed this ritual, would I become a dragon shifter?

I frowned. I was already a half-wolf shifter, and half demon. I didn’t want to be another supernatural. Hopefully, no one would bring that up or perform the ritual without me knowing.

Shane texted Dom and Tyren, already starting whatever was on the agenda for today.

Thea and Almae entered the infirmary and greeted us a short time later.

“Are you ready?” Thea asked.

Dear moon, I hoped I was. I nodded.

The SUV rolled through the smooth, newly renovated road from DuMoir Castle to the Silverblood Estate, and the road to the Silver Moon Academy.

“Look,” Almae said from my side in the backseat. Lavinia sat on her other side.

I glanced ahead and inhaled sharply as the wrought iron gates came into view, the academy’s emblem in silver in the center. Stone pillars flanked the gates, and walls went to the right and left as far as the eye could see.

As we approached, the gates opened, revealing more road and half a mile ahead, a beautiful building.

“Welcome to the Silver Moon Academy,” Thea said from the passenger seat with a smile.

“It’s very special to us,” Elisa said. She was the one driving us.

“It looks enchanting,” I said, in awe.

“No pun intended?” Lavinia teased. I shot her a you-know-that-was-intended look.

We drove to the front of the academy, where another witch I didn’t know waited for us. She was dressed in a beautiful gown. I looked down at my leggings and blouse. Maybe I should have dressed up. Nope, that wasn’t me. They would have to deal with my style.

Elisa turned off the engine and we hopped out of the SUV. The sun was already too warm for my taste, but the day was green and smelled of fresh flowers, which made me content.

“Good morning,” she said with a bright smile.

“Good morning,” Thea said, approaching the witch. “Mila, this is Raika.” She gestured to me. “Raika, this is Mila. She’s been helping us here at the academy.”

Mila and I shook hands.
