“I hope you’re not using Clary to get at Edward,” Grandma Moretti said.

Clary sighed softly. “Of course—”

“I asked him, Clary.” There went all of Grandma Moretti’s cordiality.

Clary sucked in a breath, then turned to Seth when he reached over and took her hand.

He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “I’m not using Clary.”

She caught a twitch of Zane’s brows just as Seth said that.

Grandma Moretti’s brows rose. “But you did.” She didn’t elaborate, letting silence do all the talking.

Ahh … Clary shook her head. That was Grandma Moretti’s classic move—to back one into a corner. She sucked in another breath through her mouth, but didn’t say a word. Because every sound out of her mouth would only pile more demerit points on Seth.

She looked over at Seth apologetically.

“I did.” Seth’s gaze flickered over to his brothers who were all in the kitchen, all pretending to be busy and not listening in. “But that matter is settled. I’m with Clary for Clary.”

“Why should I trust you?”

Seth’s chest rose. “I don’t know how I can prove it to you.”

“You can return the loan.”

“Nonna.” Clary turned and whispered harshly to Grandma Moretti in Italian.

Grandma Moretti listened quietly. “Clary told me to cut it out. She said I have no idea what I’m asking.”

Clary shut her eyes.

“I’m just trying to be polite,” Grandma Moretti continued. “It’s rude to speak in a language that others present don’t understand it.”

“You had no problem with Mrs. E and me conversing in French.”

“Because you needed to do well in school, and either May or you always translated for me.” Grandma Moretti shrugged. “I’m doing it for them now.”

Clary bit down on her lips in frustration.

“I can’t,” Seth said, cutting in. “Negotiations are already underway.”

“So business is more important than Clary, then.” Grandma Moretti shook her head. “Nothing was more important to Edward than May.” She smiled at Clary. “You’ve seen him walk away from deals to stay home with May.”

“I wouldn’t know. I never asked about his business dealings.”

Grandma Moretti shrugged. “Well, he did.”

“Nonne, per fa—” She cleared her throat. “Please stop.”

“Why do you need a loan?” Elton asked as he strode back to the dining table. “You need money? We all have millions in our bank accounts.” He glanced at Aldric. “Well, I do. I don’t know if the others spent their money.”

Aldric scowled. “I’ve barely touched mine. Unlike some people, I actually earn a good living.”

“I have mine, too,” Oliver said.

Clary sighed softly. “I’m sorry.”

“You need money?” Elton stepped toward Clary. “I think you are just with Seth for money.”
