“Clary.” Ron ran his hand through his hair. “Please, for heaven’s sake, would you just think about your own safety instead of worrying about the rest of the world?”

“No.”

“Clary.”

“No.”

Ron sighed heavily and closed his eyes.

“You did warn Mrs. Bestie that Gavin Ressler may not be dead,” Clary said.

Detective Woznick glowered. “Yes.”

Clary bit down on her lips, and her gaze shifted.

“And there she goes, worrying about someone else.” The detective threw his hands in the air. “Forget it.” He took out a business card and handed it to Seth. “She’s staying here with you, right?”

“I’ll keep her safe.”

“Then help me convince her to get Edward Eolenfeld to push for the DNA test.”

“I’m sitting right here. I can hear you.”

Ron shook his head. “Ressler was coming after you, Clary. You didn’t see his cell. I told you: he’s obsessed with you. His cellmate said he wouldn’t stop talking about you, about what he’d do to you when he got his hands on you. If he isn’t dead—”

“God will keep me safe.”

The detective exhaled heavily as his jaw twisted. “Clary.”

“I’m not delusional,” she said. “I’ll be careful.”

“Call me if you see anything suspicious,” Detective Woznick said to Seth.

“I’ll walk him out.” Zane opened the door.

“Thanks for coming to check on me.” Clary waved and flashed a smile.

“Don’t think you can solve everything with your smile.” Ron strode toward the door. “I’m washing my hands of you.”

“I really appreciate that you took time to come check in on me,” she hollered over before the door shut.

“Clary,” Seth said when the door closed.

“I’m not going to call Mr. E.” She got up. “I’m sorry. I need to give Mrs. Bestie a call.” Then off she went, running up the stairs.

Seth sighed and leaned back on the couch. He didn’t want to have anything to do with Edward Eolenfeld anymore, but was his stubbornness worth Clary’s safety?

CHAPTER 2

Seth was standing outside Clary’s door when his phone buzzed. It was a message from Zane. Talk to her.

He put his phone back into the pocket of his jeans and leaned against the wall by the door.

He wasn’t sure if Clary was still on the phone, and he didn’t want to interrupt her.

Then the door opened, and she smiled when she saw him. “You’re guarding my door now?”

Seth sighed.
