“I was planning on coming here to check in on her anyway,” Ron said before Clary could continue.

“I helped him once,” Clary said to Zane. “I handled his sister and nephew’s case.”

“Stopped me from murdering someone.”

Clary ran her hand through her hair, and the detective frowned.

“What happened to your hand?”

“Accident.”

Ron’s gaze flitted over to Seth.

“Not him. Why does everyone think I’m being abused?”

“Everyone?” Seth asked. “Who’s everyone?” He’d never felt so insulted. How could anyone think he’d hurt Clary?

“No one.” She flashed a sweet smile.

He narrowed his eyes, but decided to let that pass—for now. Because there were more important things to discuss.

“Not him,” Clary said to Ron. “But it’s too long a story to tell now.”

“They were held up at gunpoint by a deranged man,” Zane said. “The same man who cut her hand.”

“Okay, not that long after all.” Clary scanned the place. “Why are we all standing around when there’s a perfectly good couch?” She strode over. “And I’d prefer not to let Mr. E know. He and Grandma Moretti were really worried when my apartment got trashed.”

“They should be.” The detective trailed behind Clary. “So should you.”

Seth agreed.

She sat and pressed her hands together. “You don’t understand.”

Ron laughed once. “You mean how much pressure and resources one of the richest men in the world can bring to bear with just a show of displeasure?” He sat next to Clary, a little too close for Seth’s comfort. “I was the detective in charge of the case, Clary.”

“Ressler’s the reason I’m here in San Francisco.”

Seth hadn’t known that. He’d thought she was here solely to fix EB Co.’s problem.

“Did it matter that Ressler was arrested?” she continued. “No. Mr. E and Grandma Moretti were determined to do everything to get me away from Safe Homes.”

Ron leaned closer to Clary. “You could’ve just said no.”

“I owe everything I am to them. It’s … difficult to say no to them.”

“They’ve wanted you to quit Safe Homes for a really long time.”

Zane, standing next to Seth, folded his arms across his chest while staring at Clary and the detective.

“Right, but that was just them nagging. I could ignore the nagging.” She bit down on her lips, then released them with a smack. “But Gavin made them worried—really worried.”

The detective’s gaze roamed across Clary’s face. “And you’re afraid they’ll move you somewhere else now that Gavin might be here?” As he said that, his gaze once again flitted over to Seth.

“I just don’t want them to worry.”

Seth sat next to her and put his hand on her back. He hadn’t thought about the ramifications of having Gavin Ressler here. He didn’t think there were any.

He hadn’t even allowed himself to consider what would happen after Clary cleared up the mess at the bank.
