“You’ll know if I am.”

Pete gave a dramatic roll of his eyes, but he shifted uncomfortably in his chair, inching slightly toward the wall.

“What do you want with Clary?” Seth asked, which was all he was concerned about.

“I just wanted to warn her.”

“About what?” Zane asked.

“You should know.”

Zane sighed heavily.

Seth swallowed his frustration. “How did you know we’re dating?”

“Are you arresting me?” Pete asked Zane. “Otherwise, I’m leaving.”

Seth poked his tongue into his cheek. This was a complete waste of time. “Stop harassing Clary,” he said. He had a lot of questions, but there was no point in asking. It was obvious Pete wasn’t going to tell him anything.

“Or what?”

Seth drew a long breath through his nose as he considered that question. “I’ve recently come to realize the power of money, and I would have no problem using it to destroy you.” He’d hated how everyone around them had bowed to the Eolenfelds because of money and power.

But for Clary? He’d do whatever he needed to keep her safe. Even if he had to become just like the people he most hated.

Seth rubbed his tongue against his chipped tooth. Holly had hit him in the mouth with the butt of her gun, splitting his lips and chipping the tooth.

That, along with so many other incidents, was buried because of her money and the Eolenfeld name.

You don’t want to fall into the dark side.

He dropped his head forward to conceal his smile as he actually understood Clary’s perspective on the Star Wars movies.

“You’re all crazy.” Pete got up again. This time, he quickly stuck a leg out so Zane couldn’t reach the chair leg.

Zane stood directly in front of Pete. “Stay away from Clary,” he stated in a commanding, no-negotiation tone. He’d often used that tone with their younger brothers—usually with Elton and Aldric—when he got sick of something they were doing.

“Since she’s stupid enough to—”

Seth’s glare cut Pete off.

“I’m washing my hands of her.” Pete squeezed out between the chair and Zane, then bolted.

Washing my hands of her. Why did that sound like concern?

Zane’s frown seemed to indicate his concern. “Are you sure Clary doesn’t know Pete?”

“She would’ve said so if she did,” he said, annoyed that Zane would think Clary would lie to them.

“Will you relax? I’m not accusing her of anything.” Zane folded his arms across his chest. “Maybe she’d worked with him before and she forgot.”

“Did Pete ever work in New York?”

Zane shrugged. “I doubt it.”

Seth sighed and got up. “I don’t know.” He stretched his neck to the side. “Something about this feels off.”

Zane joined him as they headed out. “Maybe he’s working for Edward Eolenfeld. The necklace she’s wearing …”
