All because of Tamara’s stupidity. If she’d told him what she was about to do, he would have convinced her how stupid it was. But no, that woman thought she was so smart. In reality, she was an idiot.

Women were all so stupid. He’d always been able to control every woman in his life.

Except Clary.

Gavin squinted when he spotted Clary leading a large group of men. Security, probably.

“The pass isn’t going to work now.” He straightened and strode away before his continued presence started to draw attention.

He would need to make some changes to his plan.

Seth glanced over at Zane as they strode toward the meeting location that Pete Laker had sent in his not-so-anonymous text messages. “Do I need to worry about you punching that guy?”

Zane gave him a bored sidelong glance. “Do I need to worry about you?”

“He hasn’t done anything to Clary.”

Pete Laker’s messages to Clary annoyed Seth. If the ex-detective turned private investigator had something against Seth, then he should have come to him. Not gone behind his back and texted Clary.

“Do you think he’ll make a run for it when he sees us?” Seth asked.

Zane shook his head. “He didn’t have the stamina to do it when he was a detective. I seriously doubt he’ll be able to do that now.” He gave a dry laugh as he looked through the glass walls of the café. “The ex-detective’s noticed us.”

Seth followed Zane’s gaze and saw a balding man rubbing a hand over his face.

Despite Pete’s chagrin, he didn’t make any move to get up and leave.

As Zane put his hand on the door, he peered over at Seth. “You okay?”

He nodded. This café was nowhere near as crowded as the Starbucks he’d had to meet Ron Woznick at. If he could endure that, he could endure this.

Once inside, they strode over to the table Pete Laker was seated at.

Zane pulled over a nearby chair and set it next to Pete while Seth took the seat across from the P.I.

Pete sighed. “Well, I tried.”

“Tried what?” Zane asked. “To exact a twisted version of revenge?”

Pete rolled his eyes. “This has nothing to do with you.” His gaze locked onto Seth. “Well, actually it is. The whole lot of you are nothing but trouble.”

Zane’s brows drew together. “Whole lot?”

Pete gave Zane a disdainful glare, then got up. “Since Miss Fiore doesn’t appreciate my goodwill, then so be it.”

Zane hooked his ankle around the closest leg of the chair Pete had been sitting on and gave it a hard pull.

The chair hit Pete in the back of the legs, causing him to fall right back into his seat. “You—”

“What exactly does she have to be wary about?” Seth asked.

Pete scowled. “You and your brothers should know better.”

Zane put his hands on the table and leaned forward, just slightly. “If you have something to say, then say it.”

“Are you threatening me?”
