“Had to slip it in there.”

Seth shook his head, but his lips betrayed his amusement. “I’m sure He will. You’re pretty odd.” He looked over at her phone. “Does it worry you?”

“The warning?” She shook her head.

“Why not?”

She shrugged. “You’ve helped me when I didn’t even ask for it,” she said. “Even after you got the money. And you helped me.”

He frowned.

“Not because I’m close to Mr. E. You helped me in spite of him. I think that’s a first.”

He laughed.

“There’s another possibility.”

“And what’s that?”

She tipped her head toward the phone. “Any upset or angry ex-girlfriends I should know about?”

Seth shot her a bored glare.

“What? You asked me about my ex.”

“I can’t stand having people near me.”

“You’re around people all the time.”

His brows drew together.

“I mean, I’m sure you are: at work or at a restaurant.” She snapped her fingers. “When you eat at Movement’s cafeteria.”

Seth leaned away as his chest rose. While Clary had been an open book with him, he had only revealed a little of himself.

Not on purpose.

He’d told her more about himself than he’d told anyone else, but she’d only gotten a glimpse of how messed up he really was.

“Did I say something wrong?”

He rubbed a hand over his mouth. “Sure. Let’s leave it at that.”

She bit down on her lips, then nodded. “Okay.”

Seth held his breath as he waited for Clary to get upset at his unwillingness to open up to her.

But even as he did, even as the realized what he was anticipating, an opposite force of absurdity rose.

“What are we having for dinner?” she asked, her eyes wide.

“Why are you so easily satisfied?”

“Why does that sound like a reprimand? It should be a compliment.” She leaned back on the bed and stared up at the ceiling. “What’s wrong with being easily satisfied? I have people who love and dote on me. I have—in my little way—tried to make the world a better place.” She smiled. “I’m happy. I’ll be happier if I can—by some miracle—solve the EB Co. issues before Christmas.”

“That’s less than a week away.”

“Six days,” she said. “Can you imagine how happy and relieved the affected customers would be?” She closed her eyes. “Lord, it would be such an awesome Christmas miracle.”
