“On your to-do list, does it include what you’re going to do about the boys’ club?”

“Yes. Go through it if you want.” She gestured over to her suitcase. “I don’t mind. I’d love a second opinion.”

Another buzz. Another text.

“He’s dangerous,” she read out the message.

Seth gritted his teeth. What was this about? Was it really just something the boys’ club were doing in hopes of distracting Clary? Or was it something else? Something related to his past …

“What are you thinking about?”

He blinked and locked eyes with her. “Nothing.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“Jimmy,” he said, not wanting to hide it from her. His gaze dropped to her phone.

“No.”

He blinked at the stern tone of her voice.

Clary tossed her phone further away on the bed. “No.”

Jimmy was another of Holly Eolenfeld’s adopted children, just as Seth and his brothers were. Altogether, Holly Eolenfeld had adopted seven children. Seth and his brothers made up five, while Jimmy and his half-sister were the last two children to be adopted.

The dynamics then had separated them into two groups, both groups trying their best to survive Holly Eolenfeld’s abuse.

“You’ve lost contact with Jimmy,” Clary said. “Winnie’s missing. Both are unfortunate, but it’s history.” She gave his hand a squeeze.

He didn’t react this time. Maybe because he was already holding onto her hand.

“Let’s not borrow trouble where there is none.”

He exhaled heavily through his nose. “What if this remains a threat as well?”

“I wouldn’t call the messages a threat. They’re more like a warning.”

Seth studied Clary’s face. “How can you be so unbothered by this? Do you care so little about yourself?”

“Worrying about everything that can go wrong doesn’t help anything.”

“Says the person who can imagine a thousand and one scenarios of things going bad.”

She laughed softly. “Yes. I guess I sound like a hypocrite.” Her smile faded. “I just don’t want to be left behind. I want to help.”

Seth tucked her hair behind her ear. “Don’t leave yourself behind, Clary.”

She blinked, seemingly taken aback by what he’d said.

“Don’t save the world and forget about yourself.”

Clary stared back at him without a word.

“Did I say something wrong?”

She shook her head, then cracked a smile. “Jesus will remember me.”

He sighed.
