“I powered off the phone and the earpiece, then I chucked them in the fridge. No signal is getting out. He won’t be able to listen in. Not from the phone.” He strode into the apartment and found Oliver and Aldric standing next to Clary.

Oliver had a hand on her elbow, another hand hovering close to the controller while Aldric guided her with a hand on her back and another on her elbow.

“What are you doing?” Seth asked.

“She doesn’t have to be so close to him,” Aldric said. “She has to be close …” He kept guiding her back until the controller beeped, then he nudged her slightly forward. “She doesn’t have to be that close.”

“I’ll get you a chair.” Oliver ran over to the dining table.

Seth locked eyes with Clary.

“I’m okay,” she said and gave him a small smile. “Don’t worry about me.”

Zane showed Clary something on his phone, and she nodded. Then he walked over and showed the same thing to Hugh. Don’t talk. Gavin Ressler might be listening.

Hugh nodded too.

“Just sit still and wait for the bomb squad, you hear me?” Zane barked, then forcefully dragged Oliver and Aldric out of the apartment.

Seth blew a quiet breath out of his mouth. Here goes.

CHAPTER 27

Clary watched while Seth studied the contraption on Hugh’s vest.

“Can’t we just take it off?” Hugh asked.

Seth tipped his chin up. “We’ll just wait and see what the bomb squad says.” He put his index finger to his lips, then got up and walked over to Clary.

Even if her gut hadn’t been screaming at her that something was wrong, she could see it in Seth’s posture and the grim seriousness on his face. He took out his phone and typed a message on his notepad. There’s a wire right at the end of the zipper. If we take off the vest, I think the bomb will go off.

She nodded and glanced over at Hugh, who was staring intently at them. “Just sit tight and wait, okay. I’m not letting go of the controller.”

As she spoke, Seth typed another message.

Don’t freak out.

She blinked once and dropped her face forward slightly.

There’s a timer. There’s only five minutes left.

Clary kept her face straight, but she couldn’t help the instinctive bob of her throat as she swallowed her nervousness. She’d been in dangerous situations before. She’d had to pretend everything was all right while she secretly plotted her next move.

But this …

There was nothing she could do but sit and wait.

Seth put the phone down and held her shoulders. He leaned in close and whispered, “Do you trust me?”

She closed her eyes. “I feel like I’ll be sentencing you to death if I say yes,” she whispered right back, then blinked as she felt her eyes well up.

There was so much she wanted to say, all of it revolving around why he should just go.

This had nothing to do with him.

He didn’t have to risk his life for an Eolenfeld, not after what Holly had put him and his brothers through.

There was no reason for him to die.
