Her lips curled. “Is it bad?”

Seth leaned over and gave her a peck on the forehead. “I’ll be right back.” He got up and turned to his brothers. Without a word, he pushed past them and headed out of the apartment.

They’d follow.

Once he was out of the apartment, he gestured for Zane to close the door.

Seth licked his lips.

“What did you see?” Zane asked.

Seth glared at Oliver and Aldric. “Not a sound from either of you.” He sighed. “There are two transmitters.” He paused. “And a timer. Ten minutes.” He opened the door to the fire exit and sprinted down the stairs.

“Where are you going?” Aldric asked, from close behind Seth.

“He’s grabbing his tools,” Zane said with a sense of finality. “I got a text just now.”

Seth didn’t like Zane’s somber tone.

“There was an anonymous report that there are pipe bombs planted around EB Co. Bomb squad is there. They found one, a fake. But they’re worried there are others.”

“So the bomb squad isn’t on the way,” Seth said.

“Where the hell is Oliver?” Aldric asked.

Seth glanced back and shot Zane a what-the-hell look.

“He was right behind me,” Zane said.

Aldric groaned and headed back toward the stairs.

“Out of the building!” Seth shouted, but Aldric just ignored him. He didn’t have time to argue with them now. He grabbed his toolbox and swept all the random tools on the desk into the box.

“I’ll get them out.” Zane cut in front of him. “Are you sure about this?”

“If I don’t get out—”

“You only do this if you’re confident.”

“If something goes wrong, promise you’ll take care of Clary.”

Zane poked his tongue into his cheek. “I’ll marry her if you don’t get out alive.”

Seth frowned.

“Or one of them will, so you’d better get out alive and in one piece.” Zane turned and they ran up the stairs together. “Two transmitters? Could Gavin be listening in? If he finds out what you’re trying to do, he may just set off the bomb.”

Seth stopped outside the door. “It’s a short-range transmitter. One’s probably transmitting to Clary’s controller; that’s how she stopped the bomb from going off.”

“And the other?”

“I don’t know. Maybe you’re right. Maybe it’s transmitting to a listening device, but that would mean Ressler’s close.”

Zane’s chest rose. “Seth—”

“Clary’s not letting go. I’m not letting her die with Hugh.” And Seth didn’t have much time. He took a step toward the door, but Zane grabbed his arm.

“Ressler called, right? Where’s the phone?”
