She finally lifted her chin to look at Seth. “So?” she mimicked his nonchalant tone. “So if you’re holding it, you’ll have to stay here.”
“I’m staying anyway.”
She glowered.
“Relax your hand,” he said.
“No!” Hugh took a long step forward.
Seth ignored Hugh. “You don’t need much strength to keep a button down,” he continued in a gentle tone. “Your hands are already shaking.”
Clary dropped her gaze to her hand. “I don’t think that’s from exhaustion.”
“Relax your hand,” he coaxed. “My thumb’s over yours. You won’t accidentally release the button.”
“Promise you’re not going to snatch it away from me?”
He paused for a moment.
“Seth.”
“I won’t snatch it away from you.”
“You promise?”
He nodded. “Tempting, but too dangerous.”
She exhaled slowly through her mouth, relaxing her hand as she did.
“Okay. Just keep your thumb on it. Don’t need to squeeze it too tightly.” Seth put a hand on her back, then looked over his shoulder at Hugh. “Move to the couch.” He led Clary over as Hugh made his way there, staring the whole time at Clary’s and Seth’s hands on the controller.
Once Clary was seated, Seth guided her hands to her lap. “Just rest it on your lap.”
“Oliver says …”
Clary and Seth looked up at Zane.
Zane was also in sweats and T-shirt, but he was holding a dark blue vest with a large white ‘F.B.I’ printed across it. “Kevlar. I only have one.” He handed it to Seth. “What’s the situation?”
Seth explained what had happened, while he put the vest on Clary.
She wasn’t sure how a bullet-proof vest would help in an explosion. If it did, she thought Seth should have it.
But she also knew there was no point in arguing.
“Shouldn’t you put it on me?” Hugh asked. “Get the bomb off me and—”
“I’ve called it in,” Zane said to Seth, ignoring Hugh. “The bomb squad’s on the way.”
“I’ll stay and wait with Clary. You go.”
Zane leveled a bored glare at Seth.
“Where’s Oliver and Aldric?”
“I told them to leave. I said I’d get you two after making sure Elton wasn’t here. He isn’t.”
“And you think they won’t come back in when you don’t go out?”
