Clary opened her mouth, but the call went dead before she could continue.

CHAPTER 26

“The call ended,” Clary said to Seth, then turned to Hugh. “Are you—”

Seth stepped in front of her and put his index finger to his lips. “Oliver, out.” He moved toward Hugh.

“Seth, no.” Clary moved along with Seth. “He’s wearing a bomb.” She turned to Hugh.

“Is it really a bomb?” Hugh asked.

“You’re asking me?” She blew out a breath. “What the hell happened?”

“I don’t know!”

“I’ll go get Zane.” Oliver ran out of the apartment while Seth searched Hugh’s pockets. He took out a phone, then took the earpiece out of Clary’s ear. He powered off both items, before heading to the kitchen.

“Where’s the bomb?” Clary asked Hugh.

“I don’t know. I assume it’s under the sweater.”

Seth came back into the living room. “Get up,” he commanded Hugh, who surprisingly did as he was told without a word of complaint.

“Seth, please get out of here.”

Seth walked back to her. “Did you really think I’d leave you here on your own?”

“I want you to go, Seth.” She stepped away from him, and the controller in her hand beeped.

Clary quickly returned to her position nearer Hugh.

“Well, too bad. You’re stuck with me.” He tipped his head to the side, studying the controller in her hands.

“Ten beeps and the bomb goes off,” she said.

“Yeah, I figured.”

“If I let go of the button, the bomb goes off immediately.”

Seth nodded.

“So go!”

“No.”

She closed her eyes. “Seth.”

He reached for her hand, and she pulled it back.

The controller beeped again, and she hurriedly moved it back in place.

Seth gently cupped his hands over hers. “I think I can take over the controller. If you just slide your thumb away, I can hold on to it.”

“Do you seriously think I’ll give you the controller?” She licked her lips. “I have to be near Hugh at all times. I’m assuming it’s to put me in the radius of the blast.”

“Oh, God.” Hugh buried his face in his hands.

“So?”
