“Where are they going?”

“I didn’t ask.”

She made a face, then shrugged. She supposed that was for the best. Now she wouldn’t have to feel guilty about choosing Seth for Christmas. “What time are they leaving? Let’s get Hugh there before they fly out.”

She jumped to her feet when the door opened. “Oliver? I thought you were going to work.”

Oliver walked in ahead of Hugh and strode toward them. “Something’s off with him.”

Hugh carefully stepped into the apartment, as if he was afraid the floor might be pulled out from under him.

The black hoodie, though way too big for Hugh, appeared new, and he was still in the same khakis he’d worn last night.

Then again, Hugh had a lot of that style of pants.

Hugh swallowed hard when their eyes met. With shaking hands, he lifted the gift box he was holding.

Something’s really wrong. Clary took a step forward, but Seth grabbed her arm. “Hugh, what did you take?”

Hugh’s throat bobbed.

“You need to tell me so I can get you some help.”

“I don’t think Elton’s home,” Oliver said to Seth. “He just started his night shift again.”

Hugh opened his mouth, and his eyes grew red, but he didn’t say a word.

“He has something in his ear,” Seth said.

Only then did Clary notice the small blue light on the black earpiece.

Seth pushed Clary and Oliver back behind him. “Hugh, what’s going on?”

“I had no choice. He said he’d kill me.” Hugh’s hands were shaking so badly that Clary could hear the rattling of the object in the box. “He says he wants to talk to you.”

“Ressler?” Seth said.

Hugh swallowed hard. “He said his name was Jason. No, Jamson?”

“It’s Ressler.” Clary stepped forward. “Gemma’s his daughter. Sonia’s the wife.”

Seth pulled her back as Hugh took out the earpiece. “I don’t want you near him. Stay here.” He glanced at Oliver, and his youngest brother grabbed Clary’s arm before Seth moved forward and took the earpiece from the rooted Hugh.

Clary shot Oliver a glare.

“Just stay here.”

Seth returned, studying the small black earpiece in his hand. He sighed and put it on her open palm.

Clary put the earpiece in. “Gavin?”

“Clary! He’s quite an idiot, isn’t he?”

“Do you know who he is?” she asked.

“Who doesn’t? I’m actually helping to make the world a better place by killing him, no? It may even make me a hero to kill the rich spoiled brat who stole from hardworking people.”

Clary rolled her eyes. “What do you want?”
