And he was glad he could. “I’ll see you later.” He gave her a peck on the hair, then headed out of the office.

Seth wasn’t quite sure what to expect with Grandma Moretti. She had given her temporary consent, but it didn’t mean she would be cordial.

But who Seth met at the Bay mansion door was someone he never expected.

CHAPTER 23

On the drive over to the Bay mansion, Seth considered buying something before visiting. But what?

Flowers? That seemed too much.

Food? Grandma Moretti was a great chef herself, so she was probably a connoisseur. And he wasn’t.

In the end, he showed up empty-handed. After all, it was more important to make sure she was safe and get her to a safe place that to waste time on such frivolous things.

He would just keep things short and straight to the point, and he went through what he would say in his head as he strode toward the mansion’s door.

But when the door opened, he stared back at the wrinkled face, his mind going blank for a moment.

He’d seen this face before, but he couldn’t quite place it.

He really should start paying more attention to the people around him.

“Hello, Mr. Anderson. I’m David Selmer. I was the one who got back to you regarding the loan.”

“Right. I’m—”

“Who is it?” Another familiar wrinkled face appeared. This one Seth recognized.

“Hello, Seth.”

“Edward.” Seth blinked. “I thought you weren’t in the States.”

“I was worried Giulia, Grandma Moretti, would make things too difficult for Clary. She loves that girl, but she can be … stubborn.”

“We believe that it isn’t safe for her to remain here. Ressler may be coming here. He most certainly knows the address since he was working with Tamara.”

“You’ve confirmed that?”

Seth nodded.

Edward waved him in and walked into the house. “It’s okay. We’re flying out this evening.”

David stepped aside for Seth to enter.

“Until then, perhaps you and Grandma Moretti could stay at a hotel.” Seth followed the old man. “Detective Woznick and Clary’s current assistant are staying in the suite you arranged for Clary. I can arrange another for you and Grandma Moretti.”

Edward waved it off. “David will handle it.”

“I promised Clary I’d take care of it.”

The old man glanced over his shoulder at Seth. “I’ll let Clary know when we’re at the hotel.” He headed out toward the small round table on the back patio, where Tamara and Neil had attacked Clary and Andrea. “Join me for a few minutes.”

Seth wasn’t interested, but he already knew Edward wasn’t trying to talk to him about the loan or business. The conversation would be about Clary.

Another warning of disapproval, perhaps.

Whatever it was, he couldn’t avoid it. So Seth joined Edward at the table, sitting across from him.
