“Why didn’t you fall for it?”

“I just didn’t feel safe with him.” Clary leaned back in her chair and draped her arms over the armrests. “He …” Her face took on a faraway look. “He’s always smiling, but it just seems so … plastic? I don’t know.” Her lips curled. “I told you. The Holy Spirit warned me, and He was right.”

“You have a lot of imaginary friends.”

She shrugged. “I’m not that smart. How else would I be able to see through someone that everyone thinks of as sweet and charming?”

“You just have a way of seeing things.”

Her brows twitched. “Have you been talking to Mr. E?”

“No. I’m actually here to talk about Grandma Moretti. Perhaps it’s not the best idea for her to stay at the mansion on her own.”

“I’ve asked Andrea and Ron to move back in.” Clary pursed her lips. “Does that mean I just put three lives in danger?”

“They haven’t moved yet.” He brought his ankle to his knee. “Do you want her to move in with us? Not exactly with us since I don’t have any more rooms. But I thought she could stay with Zane. Or she could stay with Andrea and Ron.”

Clary drew a breath through her nose. “I’ll let her decide.” She glanced at her laptop, then checked her watch.

“Do you want me to go talk to her instead?”

“I can’t do that to you.”

His lips curled. “I’ll be fine. I’ll tell her what’s going on, let her decide what she wants to do, then I’ll just take her wherever she decides.”

Her lips disappeared between her teeth.

“I know you’re busy.”

“I’m trying to plan what to do next. Besides all the customers writing in about unauthorized opening of accounts, there’s the issue of ruined credit scores. I’m supposed to meet—”

“Clary, you don’t have to explain things to me—unless you need to talk. I’m more than happy to help you with what I can.”

Her tongue darted across her lips, and Seth stood.

He walked over to her and bent forward as he held her shoulders. “I mean it, Clary. I don’t mind helping you with this. It’s getting near Christmas. I may not celebrate it, but most people do. Everything’s slowed down at work, so I’m really free.” He straightened and shrugged. “It’ll cost you, of course.”

She stood. “Thank you,” she said and rolled onto the balls of her feet to give him a peck on the cheek.

But he turned his face as he wrapped his arm around her, and he kissed her on the lips instead.

“Is that the price?”

“Kissing me costs you?”

She made a face. “Oops.” She gave him another peck. “Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I really need to get back to work.”

He nodded and released her. “I’ll go over to the mansion now.”

“And Seth, if she reaches for her shoe, just run.”

He laughed. “I thought you said it never hits you.”

“That’s me. I can’t promise the same for you.”

“Noted.”

“Thank you.” She sighed. “I swear I’m usually not this useless, but I’m thankful that you’re here to help.”
