Oliver closed his eyes and pounded his fist against his head. “Why can’t I remember anything?”

Seth took his phone out of his pocket.

“What are you doing?” Elton snatched the phone.

“Give. It. Back.”

Elton held his hands up. “Clary says Holly has people watching us. She wasn’t sure if it was only Pete, so unless you want Holly to release whatever evidence she has, you can’t get Clary back yet.”

Seth rubbed a hand over his face.

“Clary didn’t want Oliver to know.” Elton turned to his youngest brother. “She suspects you don’t remember anything, and she wanted to keep it that way.”

Oliver swallowed hard. “I’m so sorry, Seth.”

“The only thing you have to be sorry about is being too nice to her. She wanted to ask you what happened, but you started going off on how you loved her present and how happy you were, so she couldn’t.”

“She still left because of me.”

Elton shook his head. “She left because Holly is a sick, psychotic monster.”

“No, I am.” Oliver stared at the coffee table. “I’ll go turn myself in.”

“No way,” Aldric said. “Even if Oliver really hurt Winnie, it wasn’t on purpose.”

Zane sighed again, then rubbed a hand over his mouth. “We should talk to Edward Eolenfeld about this.”

Everyone turned to Zane, looking at him as if he’d lost his mind.

“If we can get the case to the right judge …” Zane rubbed his hand over his mouth again. “Perhaps someone who owes Edward a favor.”

Aldric’s head bobbed up and down. “And if he really cares about Clary the way she says he does, then he’ll surely help her.”

“No.” Seth dropped his head forward and weaved his fingers into his hair. “You can’t expect her to ask that of Edward.”

Aldric threw his hands in the air. “She’s willing to leave you, so she must be willing to take the secret to her grave. What’s that compared to asking for a favor?”

Seth shook his head. “She wouldn’t mind bearing the burden herself, but she won’t expect Edward to clear up her mess. She’ll never tell them.”

“Especially when there’s a chance her grandmother won’t be on our side,” Zane added, sounding resigned.

“I don’t want special favors. If I killed Winnie, I should take responsibility.”

“Oliver.” Zane’s lower jaw twisted to the side. “Prison is not for someone like you, and if anyone finds you have an FBI agent for a brother …”

“What exactly did Holly say to Clary?” Seth asked.

“That Oliver pushed Winnie down the well.”

“Give me back my phone.”

Elton glared at him.

“I just want to make sure she’s with David.”

“I saw her get on the plane.” Despite saying that, Elton gave Seth his phone back. “She didn’t want me to say anything because she didn’t want to torture you with having to choose. So—for heaven’s sake—suck it up for now. We survived Holly’s games. We can beat her this time.”

His brothers stared at him, then Aldric burst out laughing.
