Seth opened the car door for her. “And she didn’t give you any credit?”

“I asked her not to.” Clary slipped into the car, then continued when Seth got in the car. “Grandma Moretti would go crazy if she found out I was involved in any way. And, Emily was almost killed because of that story. She sent me a copy of her book, and I thank God she kept her word and left me out of it. Her life is too exciting for me.” She shifted to stare at Seth. “Promise you’ll never tell Grandma Moretti or Mr. E about this.”

“I won’t tell anyone about it.” He started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.

She nodded, satisfied. “Emily would be able to find out who hired Pete.”

“But she’s retired, right?”

“She’s a murder-mystery writer now.” Clary licked her lips, then shook her head. “No. We can’t ask her for help. She was really ready to retire when we last spoke.”

“I read Glen’s articles on EB Co.”

“I did, too.”

“Then you should know how he tore down everything EB Co.—from the company to Hugh, and even Edward.”

Clary nodded slowly. “He says he’ll be fair.”

“I think there’s no harm in asking Emily Bennett if it’s a good idea to trust him.”

“Of course I’ll ask her.” Clary waved it off. “I’m not interested in dealing with the press right now. That will come later.” For now, they had a hacker to deal with.

CHAPTER 12

Up until Seth arrived at the office, he was still somewhat annoyed that his date had been interrupted. But when he saw Tony’s sigh of relief at the sight of him, the annoyance dissipated.

Because as important as he felt his date with Clary was, it wasn’t right for Seth to put the burden of solving this hacker issue on Tony. The kid was too young, and he was only Seth’s personal assistant, which explained all the panicky text messages he’d sent.

“Oh, thank God.” Tony strode over to the elevator. He pushed back the hood of his dark blue sweater and took his hands out of the pockets of his matching sweat pants. “IT is saying there’s a massive attack. There are several thousand hackers trying to enter the system right now.”

Clary gasped.

“Several thousand?” Seth frowned. “That doesn’t make sense.”

Clary turned to him as they strode out of the elevator.

“I’ve never heard of several thousand hackers all coming together to work on one project,” Seth said.

Tony ran his hand through his hair. “Our data is worth a lot of money. I heard there’s a trend of hackers entering and shutting down systems, then requesting a ransom before releasing control back to the company.”

Seth shook his head. “Hackers don’t work in such big groups,” he said, loud enough for the IT team to hear, as they neared.

“That was what we thought,” one IT employee said.

Most of the employees were in casual wear. Several of them had caps on, none of them had combed their hair, and one of them was in pajamas.

This wasn’t the first time hackers had tried to enter Movement’s system.

But, thus far, no one had succeeded.

Seth turned to Clary. “Do you want to wait for me in my office?”

Clary nudged him forward. “Don’t worry about me. Just pretend I’m not here.”

Seth opened his mouth, but Clary spun him back toward Tony.

He didn’t turn back to her, but he took her hand and pulled her up beside him. “It must be bots.” He strode ahead, then pulled out an empty office chair for her.
