“Your Grandma Moretti didn’t approve of us, and it seems too easy that Edward Eolenfeld did.” His chest rose as he sucked in a breath. “But I think it’s our history with Holly that makes it difficult to trust him completely.”

“I understand.”

Seth kneeled down next to the chair and took her hand. “But I trust you, so if you trust him …”

“You’ll trust him too?”

“I’ll try to suppress my suspicions of him.”

She chuckled, but appreciated his honesty. His gaze turned serious. “I know you’re sure he would never hurt you, but no matter how slim the possibility, I want to protect you from it.”

She took out the note she’d found and handed it to him. “Mr. E isn’t Holly. He might not have been the best father or grandfather to his family, but he and Grandma Moretti have been everything I needed.”

Seth read through the note and sighed.

“I thought you’d be relieved to see the note.”

“I already know they adore you.” Seth turned away from her and scanned the place. After a moment, he turned back to her. “But it concerns me.”

“How so?”

“Maybe they won’t think I’m good enough.”

“You are.” She took his hand. “And even if they don’t agree with me, they’ll support me. They didn’t agree with me working at Safe Homes, but they never did anything behind my back to force me out of my job. Because Mr. E could have easily done so. One phone call, and I would’ve been fired. If they wanted to, they could easily manipulate me into doing things their way. But they didn’t.”

“You are here.”

“They found an opportunity and sprang it on me. Yes, I admit their opinions are important to me. But that I remained at Safe Homes for so long proves they don’t know everything that happened at my work. Because if they did, Grandma Moretti might’ve just pushed Mr. E to make that call.”

Seth’s brows drew together. “What exactly—”

“Moving on,” she sang and ignored Seth’s glare. “I’ll find out who hired Pete.”

His eyes immediately narrowed.

“I texted him.”

“Clary.” So much disapproval in that one word.

“Don’t you want to know?”

“Not at the expense of your safety.”

“I’ll be safe. I’ll take Andrea with me.”

He tipped his head to the side, stretching his neck. He opened his mouth, then sighed and shook his head. “Why did you get so upset with Zane? Elton’s been a lot more rude and condescending. He accused you of lying, too.”

Clary blew out a breath. “I guess I’m just upset with myself.”

Seth frowned.

“Elton’s always been that way. I know what to expect from him. But Zane …” She pursed her lips. “I thought …” She shrugged. “I didn’t realize he still thought so badly of me.”

Seth held her shoulders. “He doesn’t think badly of you.”

“He said I lie easily, just because I lied to Aldric that I didn’t know where the key to the cellar was.”

“Zane’s worried. Ultimately, he just wants to protect me.”
