Well, neither do I, Mike. Neither do I.

It’s going to be a long night.

CASSIDY

“Cass, what’s wrong?” Molly asks from the lounge chair next to me. “You’ve been off all day. This is supposed to be fun.”

Today’s the day of the gala, but that’s the last thing I’m thinking about.

Aiden and Dane set up an entire spa day for Molly and me to get ready for the event. We’ve had massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures. We’re waiting in the quiet room, sipping on mimosas, and relaxing in the flickering faux candlelit room, waiting to be called for our hair and makeup to finish up the day.

I turn to look at her. “I’m just tired. It’s been a long couple of days.”

Not a lie. Trying to arrange for a dress and tux at the last minute was not easy. There were very limited choices, considering my build is not typical. Everything was either too big or not curvy enough.

When you’re small with curves, everything needs tailoring, and with these dresses, it’s not easy to find a tailor at the last minute. Luckily, Lydia, Aiden’s shopper, was incredible and pulled off the impossible.

My dress is divine, and his tux will fit him like a glove.

But that’s not why I’m in this mood.

Aiden has been off.

After the night we watched Die Hard, I thought things were different, but then we kissed and well, everything has gone to shit since.

Last night, after I got back home, he practically ignored me, and it’s been the same this morning.

To make matters worse, he’s insisted on doing things himself and has been overly meticulous, taking twice as long to finish a task.

He’s been cold and distant, and when you’re sharing a space with someone like that, it makes everything awkward.

Something is eating away at him, but he won’t say what. I fear it’s because I kissed him, which is making me feel sick.

“I feel you. Thankfully, I knew Dane would pull this on me, so I ordered a dress months ago and put it on his tab.” She chuckles. “The dipshit didn’t even notice. That or he just never said anything.” She sighs. “Not that he ever would. I don’t take advantage of his money.”

I smile at Molly. In the short time I’ve known her, it’s become very clear that she and Dane are good people. No part of me ever thought Molly would mooch off Dane. She does so much for him.

“What are you going to do with your hair?” Molly asks, eyes wide and a goofy smile plastered across her face. “I think you should leave it down and curl it. With that plunging back, it’ll look fantastic.

“I was thinking the same.”

“Have her put some highlights in. Something to make it pop.” She wiggles around excitedly. “Ooh…maybe add some extensions to make it even longer.”

“You think she’ll have time for all that?”

“Doesn’t hurt to ask. Let me handle it. Janine and I have a pretty good relationship. I bet she’ll be happy to do it.”

“Do you think Aiden will like that?”

As soon as I ask the question, I want to snap it back in and keep my mouth shut. Since when do I care what a man thinks about me? I like me, and that’s all that matters.

Except the truth is, I do care. I want him to look at me like he has before. Like I’m the only one in the room. Something he wants to own. Possess.

I want him to ask me to crawl to him. To take him in my mouth. To—

“Earth to Cassidy,” Molly calls, clapping her hands and laughing.
