He threw his head back and laughed, making me feel proud to have caused that reaction in him. He didn’t seem like he laughed enough and I loved that I could make him. He wiped his eyes and grinned down at me. “You’re just as crazy as your sister, aren’t you?”

I pressed my finger to his lips. “That’s a secret.”

“Excuse me? You can’t be here, sir.”

Sebastian shifted to see who was talking to him and Principal Hendrix spotted me. His face turned down in a frown immediately.

“Ms. Carter. Please remember that this is a school and that guests are expected to follow a certain set of guidelines while on my campus.” Hendrix hated me. To be fair, he hated art in general and thought the program was a waste of funds that could be spent on a better coach for the football team.

Sebastian bristled and stepped forward with his hand extended. “Sebastian Grant. And you are?”

“Principal William Hendrix.”

I cleared my throat and lightly put my hand on Sebastian’s back, hoping he would get the message to play it cool with my boss. “I’m so sorry, Principal Hendrix. We were just leaving.”

“Please do.” Hendrix’s eyes moved over Sebastian and then he made a noise like he found Sebastian lacking before walking away.

Turning back to me, Sebastian thrust his thumb over his shoulder in Hendrix’s direction. “Is that guy serious?”

I sighed and nodded. “Unfortunately.”

“I thought that being with you might make me feel old but I haven’t been scolded by a principal in decades. I feel like a kid again.”

I hugged him tight and then climbed into his truck. “I’m so glad you’re not upset. He was so rude. He’s always so rude, though.”

“Is there anything I can do?” Sebastian reached over and buckled me in. “With money comes a lot of options. Just how rude has he been?”

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t keep the smile from my lips. “Get in the truck, Godfather. Avery has piano practice today and if I get him there even a minute late, he lectures me about time management.”

“Do you need help getting him back and forth? Your family just grew a lot bigger so you have more people at your service now.”

I watched him as he drove and appreciated how relaxed he looked behind the wheel. “Just because one of you knocked me up doesn’t mean you have to take care of me. I don’t expect that.”

He shot me a look. “We didn’t just knock you up, angel. We’re together. Do you understand that?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“We’re together, Fiona. Together. Would it help if I made it clearer with a title? Girlfriend? Does that work for you?”

I gaped at him. “Really?”

“Yes, really. And as my girlfriend, you will be taken care of.” He turned where I pointed and frowned. The closer we got to my apartment, the more run down the city got. “Fiona…”

I pointed at the next turn and winced at the expression on his face. “It’s not that bad. Jake saw it. He met one of my neighbors. I call him Dog Guy.”

“I heard all about Dog Guy. I thought maybe Ryder and Jake had gotten a little too posh and were over exaggerating, but they weren’t, were they?”

“I don’t think it’s that bad. I’ve never had a bad experience with the people here.” I crossed my fingers and smiled sweetly at him. “And I like the idea of being your girlfriend, but I don’t need to be taken care of, Sebastian. I’m not after your money.”

He stopped in front of my apartment and put the truck in park. His eyes moved from window to window, taking it all in. “No.”

I tilted my head. “No?”

He nodded. “No. This isn’t happening. You’re a pregnant woman with a little kid, angel. This isn’t safe.”

I sighed. “Thank you for the ride. I have to get Avery to piano practice now.”

He growled and jogged around the truck to help me out. He caught my arm when I tried to walk away and pulled me into his arms. “Hey, stop. I’m not trying to make you feel bad or anything. This just isn’t safe enough for you, angel. If anything happened to you because I didn’t use the things I have to make sure you and Avery and our baby are as safe as possible, I’d never forgive myself.”
