“Just head back to your girlfriend’s place, and stop trying to force people to talk to you,” he advised.

“Is this about the kid that ran as soon as he saw us?” Mace asked. “I mean, I should have called you guys because that seemed pretty suspicious. Seems nine-one-one in Jackson is meant for suspicious people, not just emergencies.”

Office Chinny shifted from foot to foot uncomfortably.

This wasn’t going to be a matched game of wits. A squirrel could beat Office Chinny in one of those.

Monk glanced at us and shook his head. “We’ll head back to Dorothy’s. See you around, Officer.”

Office Chinny looked visibly relieved and got back in his cruiser.

I, on the other hand, was not relieved at all to know that he was the type of officer who was supposedly helping to keep Jackson safe.

We made our way back to Dorothy’s and saw curtains and shadows in windows watching us.

“I think the residents of Jackson should be more worried about their police than us,” Mace grunted.

Monk chuckled. “I’m sure once you get settled in, you can show Jackson how helpful you can be.”

Mace laughed. “Maybe I can start a Jackson chapter of the RBMC here and get the folks of Jackson to join.”

“Uh, you might want to run that past Prez before you open recruitment,” Monk offered.

“Barracuda?” I asked. I knew who was in the MC, but that was about it.

“I think I’ve got my first member right here,” Mace laughed. “But I’m not really interested in taking on my own chapter. I’ll just call you guys up when I need reinforcements here.”

Monk nodded and smirked. “I’m sure that would be doable.”

We made it back to Dorothy’s driveway, greeted by Barracuda and Rebel waiting for us. The tension from our encounter with Officer Chinny still lingered, but there was a sense of relief at seeing Barracuda and Rebel.

“Well?” Barracuda’s voice cut through the air, his expression expectant.

Monk shrugged, a hint of frustration. “Pretty sure we scared the neighborhood, but I don’t know if that will do anything about dead squirrels.”

Barracuda nodded sagely, understanding the gravity of the situation. “Well, give it a few days and see if it happens again.”

“We also ran into Jackson’s finest,” Mace grunted, his tone tinged with annoyance. “Guy was about as useless as a wet blanket.”

“Most cops in small towns are just that.” Barracuda’s words resonated with bitter truth. He turned to me, his gaze piercing. “You’ve got Mace here now. Between the two of you, you’ll get to the bottom of whoever is doing this. The only good thing is they don’t seem to be escalating past a dead squirrel here or there.”

“We’ll get it handled.” Mace’s confidence was unwavering as he acknowledged Barracuda’s trust in us. “What are you two doing here?” he asked. “We thought you guys were corralling the ol’ ladies.”

Rebel chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eye. “You should know that’s never easy, and sometimes it’s best to just leave them alone as long as they aren’t getting arrested.”

Barracuda nodded in agreement, his expression reflecting a mix of amusement and resignation. “Last they said, they were headed over to your house. They were walking over, so if the fine residents of Jackson called the police on you three, then I’m sure they are calling about four bikers and nine women carousing the streets.”

We exchanged knowing glances, fully aware of the potential chaos awaiting us.

“Uh, maybe we should head over there,” I suggested, a sense of apprehension creeping into my voice.

I had spent very limited time with the club and all the ol’ ladies, but I was very aware of the craziness that could happen.

The guys laughed.

“You’re learning,” Mace said, clapping me on the shoulder with a hint of pride. “I think it’s going to be good that you hooked up with Dorothy because we’re going to need each other if those two team up against you or me.”

As we made our way to my house, I couldn’t help but marvel at the unlikeliness of how I would find myself befriending a motorcycle club, yet here I was, hanging out with probably the most notorious club in California.
